“Simply amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

This place is simply amazing. The location is very secluded and you feel like Henri Mouhot when trekking through the jungle or paddling on the river. The bungalows are basic and clean and perfectly serve their purpose (who wants to stay inside when such an amazing scenery is waiting for you outside). Cleanliness is maybe a bit of our European interpretation but this is the jungle after all. The staff is incredible friendly and always helpful (please don't forget to tip!!) and the well-traveled Swedish owner is full of interesting stories about Asia. The food is very good (try the Laap) and fair value. I will definitely come back!!

Incredible location -- peaceful and beautiful. Enjoyed lounging in a hammock, swimming, hiking and paddling on the river. Staff are very friendly, but there seems to be tension with the owner. The food is overpriced, takes an unreasonable amount of time to prepare, and there are frequently errors with the orders. The bungalows looked remodeled, but our chief complaint was the awful, uncomfortable mattress. Would have stayed longer but for the bed and the kitchen service.

Beautiful location, great rooms with a view, at very reasonable price.

The problem with this place is that the food served in the restaurant borders on inedible (I live in Laos and am by no means a fussy eater), it's seriously expensive, and you have to wait at least two hours before you see any food (I know this is Laos, but two hours seems excessive). As you are in a very remote location, there is no alternative other than the friendly noodle soup shop in the village not far from the turning to the lodge itself.

The rule for eco-lodge success: make sure you have a good restaurant, because

The owner also shouts st hos staff in a very abusive manor in front of his guests, which for us kind of sealed the deal. Beautiful spot, great idea...but we won't be going back!

This place doesnt market itself an an upscale nature resort so you know what to expect - but you wont be disappointed ...excellent views, great restaurant and a lot of respect for the owner who is trying to build something positive and help the Laotian people ....

We came here after being dissatisfied with another eco resort up river. A totally tranquil lodge on the banks of the Nam Ngum, you simply sit and breathe in and out with the jungle.
Food is from a limited menu but of great quality and if you want a place to relax and chill out, this is it!! Totally recommended for a jungle retreat

Room Tip: Try the jungle bath and sauna!

This place is beautiful. The experience was like no other. Friendly staff, fantastic nature and super good food. The price was reasonable and so close to Vientiane city. It only took us about one hour to get from Vientiane to one of the most idyllic locations I have ewer been, and I have been around.
Waking up in the jungle and going out on the porch of my bungalow and looking at this virgin jungle setting with the river twirling thru the landscape. I will defiantly be back. The food was out of this world.

After we spent one week in Bangkok enjoying all the excitements that this big city has to offer we really were longing for a more quiet and idyllic place .... and finally we ended up in Ban Pako. What a revelation, what a retreat! Phantastic location, quiet and authentic, very good Lao food, friendly people... we enjoyed relaxing in the bamboo hammock, swimming in the river, meeting the locals and other guests, having an outdoor massage...and there are more things to do that you should be able to find out yourself. Most impressive the quietness of the jungle and the Southern sky full of stars. Just Breathtaking. We planned to stay three days but then we stayed five. We really hope and wish that Ban Pako stays as it is and never becomes a place for Blockbuster tourists. Dear Chris, Somkit and the whole Ban-Pako-Team, thanks so much indeed for making our stay unforgetable. We wish you all the best for your future plans to pimp our Ban Pako and make it even nicer. But please stay simple. Promised?
Thanks again and fond regards,
Karla and Heike from Berlin/Germany
