“Still excellent”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

There is an explosion of Italian restaurants in Vientiane taking over from the French. Sadly, it appears, quality Lao food is hard to find in town. This remains great value and of consistent quality. The owner and his staff make you welcome and it is nice, clean and welcoming. They may not have the pizzazz of the glamour Italian chefs but they consistently produce the goods.

“DON'T FORGET THIS GEM”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

The number and variety of restaurants in Vientiane continues to grow exponentially. That is why it is so easy to forget really good places that have stood the test of time. La Gondola is one such example. When I returned there (as I always do when I visit Vientiane), I was really happy to find that the service is as fine as always as is the food. The owner who is from Venice makes a huge effort to welcome his guests, and is much the same as the first time I met him years ago. At that time, ten or so students from Italy doing a MBA were sitting on the small terrace in front of the restaurant ordering all their favorite foods as they drank Italian wine and ordered course after course. What is important to me is that one can have an elegant dinner without any fussiness or pretension. To know how good this emporium is, I took the owner of a Five Star restaurant there for dinner, and she was totally pleased. You will be too (and, it won't cost you an "arm and a leg"). You might want a glass of the Italian wine (from which you have so many choices) as well.

“Sick of Asian, we chose Italian!”
Reviewed March 1, 2014

Dinner was tasty. We began with the type of bruschetta that we eat at home, apparently given to guests as an appetizer, followed by a warm serving of bruschetta which we ordered. Each couple shared a penne pasta covered delicious tomato sauce - quite cheap at about $8 despite the white table cloths. Lao beer is not as good as Myanmar beer - much heavier.

“Good food but nothing special to remember”
Reviewed February 28, 2014

The restaurant is not attractive from outside. The pasta were good, maybe too much al dente for my taste. The light was so poor that I could not really see the content of my plate. Soup was ok. House wine ok. Service ok. Not really cheap. A pleasant dinner, but nothing special to remember. The rating system gives me to choose between average and very good. I would say good.
