Laos is, per capita, the most bombed country ever. The Americans dropped 2 tonnes of explosives per capita on Laos during the Vietnam War, in the mistaken belief that the Ho Chi Minh Trail was the main supply route for the Viet Cong in South Vietnam. Subsequent release of official records show they were wrong - the main supply route was through Cambodia, from the port at Sihanoukville.
COPE shows the damage that has been done, and still occurs, as each year children keep dying from unexploded ordinance. The Americans, through the UN, are gradually cleaning it up but if they spent as much on cleaning it up as they did in one week of bombing, it wouldn't be a problem any more. Funny how money can be found for bad things but seems unavailable to make the world a better place.
Visit COPE - watch a video about how it all happened, and thank your lucky stars if you come from a country which has never been caught up in a war.

If you're someone who learns visually, you must visit the COPE center. Their gripping documentaries are so informative and really highlight a scary past that many did not know Laos endured.

Free of charge, air conditioned, lots to see and learn!

Visiting the COPE Visitor Centre should be on your list when visiting Vientiane (in all honesty, there is not much else to see/do in or around Vientiane). Be prepared to be heavily impressed by the stories of the UXOs and the human tragedies involved.
Although entrance and the tour through the Centre are all free of charge, any tips will be highly appreciated. Especially when coming from a wealthy country, please consider a generous tip as the Laos people helped by COPE need it desperately, definitely more than most, if not all, travellers passing through Vientiane.

The COPE visitor centre is a thoughtfully designed small museum, which provides a history of the US bombing of Laos, information about unexploded ordinances in Laos and personal accounts of victims of the unexploded ordinances. There are a number of English language films which you can request to watch and a number of books on display, which provides further insight. On display are a number of 'bombies' and also some prosthetic legs. It was a very moving visit, as we met and spoke to a victim and survivor while at the centre. The visit was really worthwhile, I learnt a great deal about the problem of clearing these UXOs and the ongoing effects on the development of Laos. There is a lovely coffee shop and a few small items available for purchase. It is a short bike ride (10 minutes) out of the centre of town, the ride is easy and flat. I can't imagine a tuk tuk would charge a lot for the trip either. A must visit if in Vientiene. Given the amount of information available you could spend hours here, but also worth visiting if you have just one spare hour in Vientiene.

This is a real opportunity to learn about the Secret War the US/CIA waged on Laos for 9 years. It's free to get in and offers a wide range of documentaries to view. Bomb Harvest is a must see. Felt very depressed at the end of it, as 40 years later the people of Laos are still suffering from the illegal bombing campaign.
