I was told to visit the COPE centre by some friends (as well as the UXO centre in Luang Prabang). All the tuk tuk drivers know where it is and it shouldn't cost more than 30,000kip to get there from the centre of town.
It's pretty small, as you in you're welcomed by the guys who run it who are really friendly and show how to work your way around the exhibition and put on documentaries for you. They put one on for us as soon as we arrived so it gave us a lot more perspective when we looked around the centre. It's all about the cluster bombing from the Vietnam War that hit Laos, and all the people that have been affected by it (loss of limbs, life etc)
It's horribly sad, but they do amazing work so it's a brilliant cause to support, I can't recommend going enough!

If I wasn't already apologizing my way through Asia as an American, this really sealed the deal.

This center is an excellent place to visit to learn more about the secret war and to contribute in some way to their wonderful cause. The museum is free but there is a gift shop and a good little ice cream stand and all the proceeds go towards the center.

Although the COPE center is for helping a variety of Laotians with disabilities, it focuses on the secret war and raising awareness for the disastrous bombs that were dropped (and still being dropped in other places in the world) where a large percentage of the bombs have not detonated and therefore, are scattered across the drop zones just waiting to go off if probed.

The center is pretty easy to get to and you can spend 20 minutes or 2 hours here. Make sure you visit when in Vientiane.

This exhibition is a sobering one, as it shares the story of the secret war the US waged on Laos during the Vietnam war, and the ongoing cost of UXO's across the country. But it's also an inspiring one with a great big heart, as we see the value of Cope's rehabilitation work. Do yourself a favour and check it out when you are in Vientiane.

Jump in a tuktuk and tell them to go to COPE - write it down if they are unsure. Great exhibit - we spent at least an hour looking through the displays and reading the stories. Very peaceful and respectful.
