The coffee is good. I had a 'Bacon Pie' (quiche) which was spot on, but it was the 'Bread Pudding' (Bread & Butter Pudding) which was the big hit for me. There is another branch in Luang Prabang where the pizzas seeemed very popular.

One of the first restaurants established around Nam Phou, the Scandinavian is still popular. Good quality sandwiches for a reasonable price, and a selection of freshly baked cakes. Popular with tourists and a popular expat lunch stop.

This is where to go for a great breakfast or lunch. It's on the circle next to Nam Phou fountain. Grab a cafe table beneath an umbrella outside or go into the airconditioned diningroom. Then go inside to order (don't wait for a waiter, they don't take orders). Pick up the Vientiane Times at 4000 kip for local news, order Coffee Lao for some of the best coffee ever, chat with expats and travelers from all over, and then select from some pretty excellent and huge breakfast and lunch plates for 20,000 to 50,000 or so kip. Breakfast includes eggs any style, fresh baked rolls, fresh fruit, coffee, juice, and more -- it takes a waitress two trips to bring it all. I am an aficianado of their several kinds of quiche and occasionally indulge in fresh donuts or chocolatey desserts. Check the newsboard for deals on trips, cars, motorcycles, etc. For lunch or dinner, next door is The Provencal -- also delicious.
