“Simply the best!”
Reviewed November 25, 2012 via mobile

Not sure where to sample great Lao cuisine? Then Makphet is the right place! This is one of the, if not, the best lap cuisine restaurant in Vientiane and maybe the whole of Laos. Try any of their jeow (dipping sauce) and their pan seared beef with frangipani and any other dish and you will never regret. It maybe a bit pricey compared to most Lao cuisine restaurants, but you wouldn't regret a single kip!

“Great cause”
Reviewed November 22, 2012 via mobile

I can't fault the cause that this restaurant is trying to achieve. The kids deserve a chance and from what I could see they are taking it. But No. 1 in Vientiane? I'm not so sure really. It's easy to let the cause get in the way of objectivity. The food was good, but not great. Was a little pricey for Laos standards, but still good value by western prices. I cant fault the desert i had. It was delicious. 7.5/10 for me.

“Dine well on divine modern Lao cuisine and do a good deed at the same time...”
Reviewed November 22, 2012 via mobile

Confess, the New york Times 36 hours in Vientiane column describing this international Friends NGO service project gone upscale foodie put this on our must do list. And without a doubt, the best meal we ate in Vientiane. Unable to get reservations, we took our chances and stopped by. And, gracious host was able to seat us after a brief wait (shortened by perusal of the gift shop and their cookbook). The fresh spring rolls, ancient Fish (no bones, just succulent white meat with spices, cashews, peanuts and fried basil!!! To die for), sticky rice and green papaya salad were refreshingly original in flavor. The earnest, polite, friendly staff were icing on the cake. Wish all our meals in South East Asia had been as satisfying on all levels!

“Fantastic Lao Food”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

This is an amazing restaurant, down a small side street, where we had excellent service and wonderful Lao food. Not all of the staff understand english but are very willing to help their customers. This is a very busy restaurant so make a reservation to ensure you can enjoy the wonderful dishes.

There is also a small shop inside selling very interesting craft items and a couple of cook books. I purchased one of their books "from Honeybees to Pepperwood" which gives the story behind this restaurant and their programme for marginilised children and youth in Lao PDR established by Friends-International.

The recepies are wonderful and some are the dishes that they often serve. Also included in the very colourful book are photos of Laos and its lovely people.

It was our last night in Lao PDR and a lovely way to say goodbye to this beautiful country.

“Pleasing to All the Senses!”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

We made several attempts to make dinner reservations at this restaurant, but it was always fully booked. Finally, one lunch time, we walked in without any reservations (but early), and was able to get a table outside. Pretty soon after we sat down, the whole restaurant filled up to the max!

As we were served our food, we fully understood why the place is so in demand. All the dishes and drinks we ordered were pleasing to the eyes and nose and simply bursting with well combined flavors and textures.

As a bonus, the restaurant generously shares their wonderful recipes in a cookbook that is for sale right in there.
