You can stay at a nicer place but it will cost you a lot more money. For Bishkek, this isn't a bad place for the money.
There are 2 totally different operations going on here. The old Dostuk Soviet Style hotel and the Club Dostuk Hotel 5th Floor which is renovated to European Standards and what this review is about.
When you go into the hotel go immediately to the elevator to the 5th floor. The bottom floor is for the rest of the hotel which is mainly used by locals or those on an extreme budget.
Once you get off the elevator on the 5th floor the check in desk is on the right.
The hotel staff speak fluent English and are extremely nice and helpful.
Try to get a room with an odd number so you have your balcony overlooking Victory Square and a beautiful view of the mountains. The back side even numbered rooms are the same, but just a view of other apartment buildings.
The room is small but clean with hot water and a very comfortable bed. The wi-fi works great, but keep in mind it's Bishkek, so it does go in and out at times. Nothing the hotel can do about that, it's just the way it is in all of Bishkek. The water was hot and the shower and bathroom clean
You have a small fridge with a mini bar in it that includes beer, water, coke, fanta and snacks.
The do have a night club in the hotel but I never went to it since it doesn't even open until midnight and doesn't get much or a crowd until around 1 to 2 am or so. At least that's what the night club staff told me.
The balcony is small but nice and you can take in a great view overlooking the city and Victory Square Park. The park has what we dubbed the "eternal flame", which isn't so eternal a few months back when the city didn't pay it's gas bill and it was shut off for a few days. Such is Bishkek.
Victory square is a popular place for many weddings to take place. It's worth a walk to view the eternal flame up close. If you continue to the left the Red Center is a nice shopping place. It has many different shops and even a liquor store.
If you want a really great meal within walking distance, walk out of the front of the hotel and take a left. Cross the street and just a little ways down is a LA'ZURRO RESTAURANT. It's expensive for Bishkek, but in my opinion one of the best places to eat or grab a couple of drinks and relax. They have excellent Lebanese and Italian food. When you walk in to the left is the nice more formal looking part and to the right is the more relaxed and cozy bar area with big screen TV's. During the summer you can also sit outside on the deck or under the patio.
Other points of interest nearby is a bowling alley, the Tsum or Zum shopping mall. Plenty of restaurants and coffee shops. Almost everything will be off of Frunze or Chui Street. Best to ask the staff for directions or take a taxi.
You should not pay more than 100 Kyrgyz Soms (KGS) (about $2 USD) for a taxi just about anywhere in the city. If they try to charge more and you have a local cell phone dial 156 for Express Taxi. Express Taxi speaks English and charges 100 KGS ($2 USD) or 400 KGS (about $8) to the airport. If you don't have a local cell phone have the hotel staff call Express Taxi for you.
Overall I think Bishkek is a fairly safe place compared to other major cities I've stayed at. Late at night though there are problems with drunks, muggings and prostitution and the city tends to turn off a lot of the street lights to save money on electricity. If you do walk late at night, stay on the main streets and avoid walking through the parks at night. During the day you should have no issues at all.
