“Not bad at all”
Reviewed February 16, 2011

A very decent hotel, with a few wrinkles, which are easy to overlook.

Had a room facing the city, as there was construction facing the mountains, and I didn't like the idea of waking up to the sound of heavy machinery.

Woke up the first night, because a few Americans started a fight in the hallway. Great. An hour later (5:30 in the morning) housekeeping bursts into my room! Oh, sorry, wrong room. Then they go to the room across the hall, and start cleaning it up. With music on. At 5:30 in the morning. Seriously?

This aside, the hotel is fairly nice and clean, not too expensive - in other words a definite repeat. Some may complain it's on the outskirts of the city, but with a 10 minute drive to get literally anywhere in town - who cares.

The 5*-Jannat (= "Paradise") is the real and only alternative to the Hyatt, for demanding travellers in Bishkek. The rooms (5th floor, mountain view) are even better than the Hyatt. Very nice!
The price level (incl. tax and breakfast) of US$ 175 (single) to 195 (double) is only half of the Hyatt price and a very good deal for this city!
The outside pool and restaurant of the Jannat are part of the adjacent sister club and casino "Monte Carlo". The gastronomy and design is very much local or Chinese style and can not compare qualitywise with the Hyatt, however at least you get a sympathetic (even if sometimes "loud") taste of this foreign country, whereas the Hyatt is faceless Western style.
I even spoke to some US state department and NGO girls who also preferred to stay in the Jannat for the same reasons.
Downside of the Jannat: you are at the outskirts of town, literally no one else between yourself and the impressive Tian Shan mountain range. Taxis to downtown take 15 minutes for ca. US 5.

I wish I could say nicer things about my experience at Hotel Jannat, but it was a week-long exercise in frustration.

The hotel is new, clean, and very modern. The owners were definitely trying to channel the Hyatt feel: It looks very similar in the lobby with the set-up, the lounge, the marble floors, etc. Unfortunately, the staff has no where near the Western-style training you get at the Hyatt.

The staff is trained to bow, scrape, and greet you incessantly. They are constantly welcoming you, even if they greeted you a mere 5 minutes before. Beyond that, however, the staff has had ZERO training--or perhaps they don't have the authority--to do anything for you. It is infuriating, because they are so totally earnest and sincere, but so totally impotent.

Cases in point: Maid made up the room, but did not replace dirty glasses (yogurt-drink coated glasses---you could not miss that this glass was dirty.) for two days. I tried to call the front desk. Busy. (Later I found out that my phone was incorrectly wired to ring the front desk. The front desk said "Oh, it's probably wired wrong" with no indication that it would---or should---be fixed.) I notified the front desk on my way out. When I returned, said dirty glasses were still there. Had to go down again. Was told, "Oh, you weren't in your room so they couldn't replace them." As if they don't have access to your room???

The waiter was trained in pre-bussing, serving, and being very friendly, but when you asked about the preparation of the food or recommendations, he would freeze and couldn't answer anything. Their restaurant is very expensive, and their chicken dishes categorically awful. It tastes like the chickens are 20 years old, and have subsequently sat in a freezer for another 5 years.

We held a conference there and had less-than-straightforward dealings with management. Since we wouldn't sign a contract with them to hold a subsequent conference there, they decided to change prices on us at the last minute (i.e., 7 PM the Sunday before we began). They also agreed to provide certain things (pads of paper, pens, water) that they did not--again, something we found out 14 hours before we were to start our conference.

They have a business center with 3 computers and printers. They will charge you $.70 per page for printing. Internet is available in your room, but also is expensive at $20 a day or so. They burned 20 CDs for me at the business center and charged my $60. Their computers are also laden with viruses, since it appears that the majority of their software is cracked.

The rooms are nice, large, and clean. They have cable TV with shows in multiple languages. The bathrooms are modern with glass shower stalls that look nice but leak because of poor (Soviet-style) installation. Breakfast is included. The more guests staying, the more the offerings. Evidently two days before our conference began, the pickins were very slim. Once we filled up the hotel, there was a bounty of hot and cold foods of the breakfast and lunch variety. Furthermore, the staff neglected to tell you that in addition to the buffet, you can order certain items a la carte. One morning I ordered kasha, and the server froze. I ate my a la carte items, waited 20 minutes, no kasha. No explanations, nothing. Just a "have a good day" with a kind bow on my way out.

Jannat is about a 15 minute ride from Bishkek city center. You have a bit cleaner air and a beautiful view of the mountains there. There are several restaurant and cafes within a 5-10 min walk from the hotel. A casino is attached to Jannat, and there is another restaurant in the casino that I did not try. However, there were no street lights when we were there, and lots of huge potholes and open manhole covers. You have to be very vigilant where you are walking, which can be tough in the dar. There is also a grocery store about a 7-minute walk away.

I wish I could like the Jannat, because they are set up be a good place: Good facilities, good amenities, hot water..... Unfortunately, their service is so incompetent that it's just not worth the hassle. There are plenty of other places in Bishkek that are more competent, more centrally located, and less expensive than Jannat. You would do better seeking them out.
