I really enjoy going to books and coffee. They have the best cheesecake in town. The employees are always smiling and many speak English.

“Still cozy for reading, coffee, great quiche, carrot cake”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

Improve your English, share your English, grab a book or a gift or just enjoy American style cookies, spinach or broccoli quiche, cheesecake. No place better in Astana. Beautiful aquarium in front. Cozy couches to seat in the winter sun. Pleasant staff. Can't rent DVDs, too.

Dear mmoly!
We're so glad that you found us in the heart of 'old Astana' and are taking advantage of this little oasis. I think you might have meant to say that you can check out DVDs from our library. There are also thousands of great books to choose from.
Hope you are staying warm!
Best wishes,
Martha (owner)

“The best coffee/book place in the city!”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

It's a true gem of the city - a place where you can pop in to have a coffee (or tea), a sizeable piece of cake at a decent price and to practice your English. You can read a book in a library or get a few DVDs - a really cosy and authentic place! Highly recommended - you'll be come a regular! Guaranteed!

“Cozy, inexpensive, fresh pastries!”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

A sweet, non-pretentious place to just relax and have a cup of coffee (American size!) and a spinach quiche. Or a cinnamon roll. Or a slice of cheesecake (if you are an American expat, you might be excited to see they have one with oreos!). They don't pre-cut their pies and cakes, so you can actually ask to cut a smaller/bigger size depending on how hungry you are - the price will depend on the weight. Very friendly owner and staff. Be prepared for the fact that the place is very small and somewhat difficult to find. It's on Kenessary near the Valikhanova crossing, but you have to get past the front buildings.

My only complaint: they close very early, at 8 pm, so I never have a chance to go on a weekday night.

Dear Darya B,
Thanks so much for your great review! You like all of the things that we think are particularly special about our place. Everything about us is unpretentious, so you can really relax and be yourself here. For me oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies are comfort food : ) that I should eat less of, but they're hard to resist!
Thanks for your feedback about our hours. We hope to stay open longer on the weekends starting in November - until 21:00. Right now we're only open until 19:00 on Saturday/Sunday.
Any other feedback you have would be welcome. We have a good map on our website and on FB, but you're right - we're not right on Kenesary, but behind Fast Food and Kazakh Telecom.
Look forward to serving you again! Martha

“Cosy place for cake, coffee and chill”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

Books & Coffee is a hidden gem in the café scene in Astana. Located near Kenesary/Valikhanova street, its a place to chill out after a stressful day or choose from a good selection of excellent home made cakes on a week-end.You can take a book to read or a board game to play. If you stay in Astana for longer, you can become library member and take out books and movies from the library.
