Like most of the restaurants on "restaurant row" or Saryarka, this place ain't bad, but it seems to just be missing something. Perhaps it is the total lack of authenticity. The restaurant, which is supposed to be European, lacks the warmth and charm of a real European beer hall. It doesn't help that it's usually empty, and too expensive for what you get. Sure, our entrees were fine, but they sure were not cheap, and despite the fact that we were the only ones in the place, the service was hard to locate when we needed anything. In short, the food is just fine, but the experience is lacking.

Imagine our surprise during a business trip to Astana, finding a restaurant with an advertised Swedish theme! It had to be tried even with admittedly low expectations. The substantial restaurant is in a relatively new area on the 'left bank' with obvious attempts to concentrate high end culinary outlets. Tre Kronor takes its name from others of the same name around the world but it's unclear if there is any connection.
The menu has a moderate range of dishes with an eclectic mix of European influence. There are some Swedish references and attempts at classic popular swedish titles, but little effort is made to emphasise the Swedish or even Scandinavian theme. Casual questions to staff indicated little knowledge or enthusiasm for promoting the heart of the place, which is a shame as the restaurant ambiance needs focus.

Our food selection covers steak and salmon dishes with a variety of separate side vegetable platters. Nicely prepared and of adequate proportion, the main dishes suffered only from a very unnecessary delay between individual servings. For such a large capacity restaurant and with only 4 or 5 tables full (20 people) there is no excuse for delayed or erratic service. The beer choice was however excellent. Draft tre kronor or Bavarian (..so Swedish! :-) brewed locally or on site was really excellent! Very small but quality wine selection can be ignored in favour of the excellent beer unless you really need Grape.
The house band made a noble effort to improve the atmosphere, ant it's clear that later diners will benefit from increased numbers in the traditionally late Kazakh dining habit...they struggled with the numbers during our visit...excellent lead guitar however,
Prices are on the high side but depends on expectation. Our bill came to 15 000 kzt (75 euros) for a shared starter two mains and two drinks each.
In summary, great beer, excellent potential and not bad value considering where we are and local context. Could do better pushing the theme and with service timing....we will return!

Partners invited there for lunch. By legend this is a replica of Tre Cronor restoran in Stockholm, as for me looks more German with its fachtwerk walls. Liveclassic pilsener beer, good kitchen with some local specialities. I got small grilled fish (do not know english name, in russian - karas') as starter and horse steak as main dish. Both were fantastic, would highly reccommend to try

Try Good Horse Steak 360 gr. Beware the so-called sorbet. Big enough place with live music switching on each 2-3 songs. Deserves the Money paid.

I like they started with Salsa Fiesta, but besides that, cousines could be better and cheaper. i.e. there was a Australian 90 USD steak that was not that good.
