“Good Place To Stay in Phnom Penh”
Reviewed December 21, 2009

i am a regular customer of Royal Guest House. I was feeling warm while i was staying there like home sweet home. The owner and stafffs are friendly and very helpful especially i got a big aircon room with three beds with satelitte TV for just US$15 a night. i and my family stayed there for a week and we also got a special discount as well.
They clean my room everyday with new towels and new sheets. They also have free movie show down stair at the cafe bar every afternoon. we really enjoyed the coffee was so great and the food is very delicious with reasonable price. The most important thing is location. It's closed to the national museum, royal palace, central market and river side. I strongly recommend this guest house as it's my favorite. I will go back and stay there again in April 2010 and hopefully they keep that room for me and my family. I've aready booked it cos they are always full.

Separate room from the main building, quite high price (10$/night, next night 8$) for a room with fan, tivi and bathroom. Internet is charged, didn't use cafe bar.

I`ve just read some reviews about this place, which was the worst place I have EVER stayed in my life!! Not only because it was noisy, dirty rooms and bedsheets, smelly, the staff was just terrible and not friendly at all, rooms full of bugs, and huge rats running around your feet while you're having a (warm) beer on the tables by the sidewalk. The worst part was the ridiculous scam to keep our passports for 4 days, in order to get us visas to Vietnam, lying about some vietnamese holiday or something, just to keep us paying there for 3 nights longer than we wanted. Afterwards we found out these visas are given in only one day...And that this guesthouse does this kind of scams everyday... And when we went to complain, the woman at the guesthouse was really arrogant, as if she had the reason... And we couldn't be too rude (and that was really hard!), or even leave the place, because after all she still had our passports, and we knew we could not trust her...So we ended up having a very bad experience in Phnon penh, and mostly because of this stupid guesthouse, so if you know what is good for you, and you don't like to suffer, stay away from this place!! The guys from Lonely Planet should change their comments about this horrible guesthouse urgently, otherwise more and more travellers are going to suffer the same way! AVOID THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!

I just read the “They will screw you at this hotel” review and I found out that they are even more creative in ripping you off when arranging Visas for Vietnam. We arrived on a Sunday, and we’ve been told that the following day was a holyday, so they would need at least 2 days to arrange our “express visa”. Despite the following day was a holyday, they insisted in getting our passports on Sunday (and of course the US$ 35 payment).
The next day, we not only found out that it was not a holyday, but we found out that the visa to Vietnam can be issued in a few minutes in the embassy for the same US$ 35. So we asked our passports back. But the arrogant girl in the reception told us that our passports were “already gone to the embassy in Phnom Penh”. So we went to the embassy to check it out and… surprise! Our passports were not there! The lady in the embassy told us that many guesthouses take the passports to Sianukville, where the visa is cheaper, to make more profit on it – and of course to hold you in that awful guesthouse, with dirty and noise rooms.

We booked this place because we had seen good reviews including in the lonely planet. We had been in south east asia for 3.5 weeks and this was the worst place we stayed. The sheets were disgusting. The sheets had dirt on them and the doona cover had dried blood. By the time we realised it was to late at night to find another place to stay.

By far, the most unfriendly, unhelpful staff I encountered in Cambodia. Got much friendlier service and better facilities at other, cheaper places. Room was serviceable but run-down with more than a few ants as roommates. Not recommended.

This place is awful. Really made me question Lonely Planet's integrity. I thoroughly do not recommend Royal Guesthouse, it's dirty, really unsafe, bedbug & rat ridden, and expensive - save yourself the agony and stay elsewhere. We're backpackers, so we're quite happy to rough it, but this was definitely at the bottom of the list for guesthouses during our entire trip.

We arrived at around 5.30pm, to be told the only room they had left was a family room - with 6 beds which would cost us $20 a night. The room was huge, but 3 of the beds INFESTED with bedbugs. The shower drain did not drain, and flooded our bathroom for hours. We would have left, but were afraid to walk around outside in the dark with our bags (it seemed a really dodgy). The internet was ok, as long as you don't mind the rats scuttling through the reception area. Seriously.

To get to the rooms - you had to climb a pitch black , long staircase (unsafe), which led directly onto the street (even more unsafe) and anyone off the street could hide in the corridor and attack you. Terrible safety. Once inside the rooms - we had the opposite problem - there was a locked gate (by padlock), and a heavy deadlocked door. If there had been a fire, we would definitely have burned in our beds - no way could we get out of that locked room in less than 5 minutes.

Our room only had fans, which were really inadequate at keeping us cool, and we slept on the bed with the least bedbugs, over the blanket, the towels, our own towels, and sleeping bag liners to protect ourselves.

When we attempted to use the 'complimentary' lockers (because the owners claimed the rooms weren't secure), the lady tried to charge us to buy a padlock. No way. We left our stuff in the room and it was fine. You also have to buy your own toilet paper for your room - at reception they try to sell you a 6-roll pack. Forget it - and go buy locally, if you end up having to stay here.

The Guesthouse is about 4 blocks back from the Riverside, and at night, the walk to the Riverside is scary. Streets entirely unlit, gangs of youths staring, and general intimidation happening. We took less than $15 with us because of the high likelihood we'd be robbed, and took a tuk-tuk on the way back because we didn't want to risk it.

I can't understand why anyone would voluntarily stay here. We left as soon as we could the next morning (8am), and went to a nearby hotel, which was so much better. Royal Gueshouse ruined our time in Phnom Penh. Use Tripadvisor and find yourself a better place to stay - Lonely Planet's recommendations are just too unreliable.
