“Perfect hideaway...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2009

My partner and I were delighted with our room at the Pavilion. We booked the Garden Cottage (which was the cheapest room) and were sceptical about what we would find but were pleasantly surprised! The room was small but well presented. It had a large comfortable bed and there was attention to detail. The shower was also very good! The pool area was lovely with daybeds littered around the gardens – perfect for lounging!

Our only complaint is the unfriendly attitude of the staff. They are quite abrupt and at times miserable. The woman serving us breakfast on the first morning was the worst of the bunch – she didn’t bother explaining to us what you got for breakfast and didn’t want to give us black tea. In retribution for asking for black tea she didn’t even give us our fruit at the end of the meal! We later discovered that the manager/owner was away at the time but the day before his return the staff’s attitude changed for the better.

One other small negative is that the pool area is invaded by locals over the weekend who come to use the free WIFI and pool. They pay small fee and can stay the whole day – if they order food from the bar the fee is wavered. It can get very crowded and there is no where for hotel guests to sit and enjoy the pool.

All in all though, the Garden Cottage is excellent value and this is definitely a hotel worth seeking out.

Usually the staff is quite friendly and we train them for better greeting people. That is not very difficult as Cambodians are naturally very smiling and cheerful people!

The grounds are not open to people from outside but to some members. Those have accepted the rules and we limit their number. We have to accept the members as they are our insurance in case of a major crisis, such as a birdflue outbreak, SARS or the financial slowdown when tourism would stop. If not, we would need to double our room rates, which is certainly not a solution. All hotel pools in Phnom Penh are open to non-staying visitors, ours is, as far as I know, the only ones to limit their numbers.

The Pavillion is a colonial gem in a vibrant but sometimes overwhelming and always chaotic and dirty metropolis.

You step through the gates at the Pavillion, which is one block away from the palace, and all the hustle and bustle seems to melt away. It is odd the first couple of times walking past the little kiosk at the gates (always manned to ensure the absence of prostitutes from the pavillion - which is to be applauded) but the staff there are so unstintingly friendly and happy you soon forget that it's a bit unusual. You then see the pool and bar which are the perfect place to start your evening.

Clean, comfy rooms with mosquito nets and air conditioners, free internet in the lobby, if only Western hotels were so accomodating.

It is expensive by Phnom Penh standards but still incredibly cheap when compared with european equivalents.

A fantastic little hotel.

I had a nice room with a balcony. The grounds were very peaceful.
The food was ok and the breakfast had fruit bread coffee and eggs.
I do not know of many places that have such a peaceful surrounding. I felt at home, Alos a few restaurants just a block away

My partner and I stayed here for 5 nights in total in December. Due to the airport closure in Bangkok, we had to email the hotel to advise we might not make it ( they ask for confirmation 7 days before arrival). 24 hours later we managed to re-book via Singapore so I got back in touch and all our rooms had been taken! Luckily they still had rooms free and after a bit of to-ing and for-ing with emails, we stayed in the standard double for the first 2 nights, instead of the room that overlooks the pool which I had booked months earlier. We were very happy with the room, for $50 it was great. Pretty spacious and nicely presented. The hotel itself is a little oasis hidden behind huge walls. I have read some criticisms of their breakfast and I don't know where they come from. True, it's not a buffet breakfast of the Thailand hotel order, but freshly baked bread with lovely jam, fresh juice, fruit and eggs done to order. It was more than enough to set you up for the day and was served around the pool so very tranquil.

On our return from Siem Reap, unfortunately we had to move rooms for each of the 3 nights. However, we were out each day for the full day so we just packed up, handed the keys in and the hotel moved our bags. We got to try out a twin room, a standard double and a superior double. Twin room had less space for the bags but other than that all rooms were nice.

Only comment - water pressure not great. Some rooms were better than others. Also, we had been forewarned about the hot water being solar heated. This was fine most of the time, but one morning where we had to get up early, it was only luke warm despite being run for a long time. Oh well, it woke us up!

I found the staff helpful and pleasant and certainly they dealt with my change of plans very quickly. Any time we spoke with them at the hotel they were fine , they just keep themselves to themselves and don't maybe fall over themselves to make sure your every moment is wonderful, but I prefer it that way. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

After a night arrival to the airport in Phnom Penh, it was very pleasant to come to this hotel. The staff was welcoming and helpful and provided us with good information upon our arrival. Our room was delightful with a balcony that overlooked the pool area. My only complaint would be that the bathroom in the room was rather basic and lacked the special touches that are present throughout the rest of the hotel.

The restaurant staff was very accomodating and cooked us a delicious dinner at 10pm- actually some of the best food we had in Cambodia!

The common areas are well maintained, the free internet is great, and we loved the charm of the place. The property is lovely, the staff was very pleasant, and it feels like a wonderful secret to enter the gates and come into this oasis of a hotel.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel and found the location very convenient. The pool area is great with very comfortable seating to relax in. We had a balcony room which I loved and the staff were mostly very friendly.

Gorgeous renovated colonial building which provides a real retreat from the busy streets of Phonm Penh. The pool area is really nicely done with loads of verdant foliage and little huts to recline in round the pool, the rooms were lovely and it's well located fairly the palace and St 240. The one thing that lets it down is the management was not overly helpful - particularly when compared with the fantastic hospitality we received elsewhere in Cambodia - and the general atmosphere in the hotel wasn't as friendly or relaxing as we had hoped.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It all started when we fell in love with a hidden gem of French-Khmer architecture from the 1920s near Wat Botum, one of the most venerable and original pagodas in Phnom Penh. Renovation and remodeling were led with due respect for the character of a building which had been, as we learnt it later on, a private retreat for Queen Consort Sisowath Kossamak, the late King Sihanouk's mother. Opened on August, 18, 2006 with 10 rooms, The Pavilion has slowly expanded over the years, offering now 36 accommodations throughout three more period buildings that have been added to the property: "The New House", former residence of the chief veterinarian at the Royal Palace; "The New Villa", formerly the private residence of a Cambodian senator, and "The Sun-Pool Villa", our latest addition which used to be lodgings for diplomats based in Phnom Penh. Each one has its own style and atmosphere, with distinctive architectural features such as an elaborate wooden stairway, intricate iron wrought railings, etc… ... more   less
