“Eye opener”
Reviewed June 21, 2006

I stayed here while on a trip with a travel company which prides itself on ethical travel/tourism. The hotel was fine although some others on the tour complained about the quality and cleanliness of the bedding and towels - I thought it was okay for what we paid. Receptionists were nice enough but one ruined it all by offering to get me, erm.. 'company' for the night, going into detail about how she could be got in and out without anyone finding out. I found that pretty disturbing.

Simple and value for money mid sized river front hotel. Reception, lift, security.
Rooms have either a view of the Tonle Sap river (boat dock & roof of seafood restaurant) or at the back the outdoor hotel restaurant (rather an eye opener particularly when there are 30 people catering the many weddings hosted at the Riverside) and a tumble-down French colonial ruin.
Rooms are basic but very clean. A/C, fridge, satellite international TV with European, Asian & US channels, kettle (no cups), hot water shower and bath (very hot), beds fine if a bit soft, carpet a bit rough, woodwork a bit worn, but it's OK. Free tooth brushes and combs!
Cheap laundry, free safe deposit boxes in foyer, helpful and friendly staff who will translate for you (into English) if necessary and give advice. Tuk-tuks (seat up to 5) or motodups (motocycle taxi seat up to 2 Western sized adults, up to 5 Cambodians!) hang around outside so it's no problem to get anywhere in the city for a dollar US at any time day or night. They also speak basic English and are a great laugh.
Breakfast is set & basic & rather hectic/noisy. Choice of (either) eggs OR bread (ask for baguette if you don't like warm cheap white stuff) OR rice porridge OR various types of noodles - which is what the locals had (very popular for outside families to eat breakfast there, always a good sign)
Onsite 24 hour electronic casino, if that is your thing! You have to walk through it to get to breakfast, which is quite interesting.
Walking distance to various small restaurants and cafes as well as Wat Phnom (lovely hill-park setting, monkeys and wat elephant), bit further walking distance to main riverside restaurant/bar district.
Can book & get express boats and express buses within walking distance (to anywhere else in Cambodia).
Would recommend tuk-tuk to anywhere else.
