Owner description: A standard Southeast Asian temple.

I really can't understand the exhortations of visiting this place. Besides the historical significance and the fairly amusing legend this is a rather dull place. The main stupa is poorly maintained with a withering facade and crooked rods sticking out of it. What I could see there wasn't any information whatsoever and the clock was just a bunch of metal bars going round and round on a plain patch of grass. There was also a bunch of cages crammed with birds everywhere which was painful to watch but (sadly) you get used to the poor treatment of animals in this country.

I have to say, I've seen pictures of Wat Phnom when the nature around is blooming and I have to say it looks like a completely different place. If you visit Phnom Penh during the Khmer new year (or Pchum Ben) this is apparently the place to be.

All and all, even though I only payed 1 USD I felt a bit cheated. Good thing the money goes to charity.

Modest entrance fee and one of the must do activities on any visit to Phnom Penh. Best to go early morning before it gets too hot.

Note the most impressive temple complex but still worth a visit to get views of the city and to enjoy the evening breeze

Visit for its historical significance in the naming of the city rather than expecting some opulent Wat.
For a $ its cheap and a contrast to the palace complex and city below.

The Buddhist Temple Wat Phnom is situated about three kilometers from
the Royal Palace. Wat Phnom is a heavily forested circular shaped park
in the middle of stereotypical 3rd World urban blight. It’s a
spiritual refuge for the city dwellers during the day.
Once the sunsets, Wat Phnom switches gears: it changes from a
meditative place for worship to a cursing spot for impoverished
working girls just off the farm and a gaggle of glittery Lady-boys
looking for transient trysts and some thank-you dollars.
Wat Phnom metamorphosis from the spiritual to the carnal; from the pious to the prurient is daily or nightly depending how you look at it.
Caution: be aware that when night falls all kinds of lowlife hang-out
in the Wat Phnom environs. Stroll at your own risk.
