Owner description: Housed in a 1937 Art Deco building, this market is a city landmark.

This place is easily avoidable. It is full of kitsch and junk stuff. The art deco building itself may be of interest, but there is not one stall that sells any worthwhile stuff.

I love Central Market (New Market/ Psar Thmey). But sadly, Central Market does not love me.

There is such a great variety of shops here, you can find practically anything and can usually manage to get it at a decent price, even as a tourist. All set in one of Phnom Penh's most beautiful buildings.

The surrounding shopping precinct is what does it for me though. Lining nearby Monivong are Camera and electricals, Music, computers, etc. And the fantastic Sorya Market is just a 5 minute walk.

I could easily spend a whole day in the area, as I have done on many occassions.

Sadly, after many months of happy market going, it all came to an end one fateful afternoon when my bicycle was stolen. Unfortunately, the reality is that this area can be dangerous for tourists, so be very careful of your belongings here.

The Central Market in Phnom Penh is a typical Asian market in respect to the goods offered for sale. However, architecturally, it is unique and quite spectacular. It was constructed in 1937 by the French, with a soaring central dome, flanked by four large wings. Under the dome there is a vintage clock. The approaches to each of four entrances have recently been enhanced by covered walkways in a complimentary style.

Had a great day shopping here and bartering with the stall owners - got some beautiful silver bangles and lots of other stuff.
Everyone was friendly and we felt we always paid a fair price for our items - def reccomend visiting at the end of your trip so you dont have to carry around all the goodies you buy there :-)

Great market, organised arms spread out with a variety of products. Not all are cheap tourist gear, but fantastic dresses, lovely pants and shoes. You'll find everything you'd expect including trays of fried beetles and bugs for a quick snack.
