Rightfully the top tourist attraction in Phnom Penh. Not a lot to see - 2 hours suits most travellers. A most important commentary on the Pol Pot era, a genocide ranking with the holocaust, something that must be preserved for future generations.

We really questioned whether we should visit as we didn't want to feel like gawking tourists, but wanted to show our respect, so we visited and were glad that we did.
From the moment we arrived it felt sad but also peaceful and dignified. The audio was essential to understand each area and the stories from those who survived and the guards was heartbreaking but helped you to understand some of that terrible time. It guided you around the site stopping at each area and allowing you time to just sit and reflect. Some of it was hard to listen too and see but that's what happened and we need to make sure it never happens again.

pol pot and his khmer rouge were simply horrible, brutal, totally psychotic and über paranoid. that this occurred in my lifetime seems unfathomable and this walking tour through the killing fields does a good job at telling the history.

i suggest combining it with the toul sleng genocide museum (which is best seen fist) and you can draw a detailed picture of the atrocities of pol pot.

many of the original structures are gone, but the excellent audio tour that comes with the ticket price is very worth while. also, upon the realization that there are pieces of human bone half exposed on the walking trail really hits home on how terrible this regime was. spend a couple of hours at this place--despite how utterly tragic this all was, it is very worth the visit to hopefully prevent anything like this from ever happening again.

We took a tuk tuk to the killing fields which is a hell of a journey, very dusty bumpy roads leading there.
But its worth the effort, we took our tuk tuk driver for lunch when we arrived in a lovely restaurant called Birds nest
we made a mistake of going into the killing fields at midday, boy was it hot
Once there they give you a head set to listen to which guides you round the killing fields, its all pretty ghastly and very upsetting. It certainly gives you a different point of view on life

Please make sure you take 6usd ticket so that you will get to know the history and explanation of each check point via audio (comes with several language) rather than 2usd ticket where you just visit the place without knowing the whole story. unless you have made the research before coming to the place.
