“DISAPPOINTED THIS TIME”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

DISAPPOINTED
I came back to this hotel and recommended and promoted it over the years because of the comfortable relaxed retreat like atmosphere it gave me especially the outdoor thatched roof covered area, where i used to spend a lot of time reading and surfing the net under this shaded area. To me It was like an extension to the room.
Unfortunately they have recently renovated by pulling down this area and along with it the unique atmosphere it gave the hotel and what i used to go there for.

All hotels especially in Asia have their strong and weak points from customer service to quality of rooms to internet signals therefore to mention Billabongs faults for me would be just trivial, however the local staff at Billabong are their biggest asset from reception, kitchen, bar and restaurant to room service staff.
However if you took away the swimming pool this hotel I feel has no competitive advantage over other hotels and guesthouses in the area.

After staying for a total of 18 nights this time with no discount or complementary appreciation offer for a long term stay as i was told I used a booking agent to purchase the room, I therefore had plenty of time to look around at other places to stay in for my next visit and was quite surprised at what other properties were available and very competitive all round.

I would like to offer a recommendation that "hotel promotional" photos of the old style hotel, such as the one on Tripadvisor and other sites should be removed from websites and updated otherwise people might think they are being misled.

Anyway, thanks for the past stays Billabong, I enjoyed the past stays but could not return or recommend you now to others.

Good luck with your new direction in the future.
Peter

I stayed in a standard single room. It was basic but clean. There is a safe and fridge in the room. Wifi signal was weak in my room because it is far from the main area. Wifi signal in the restaurant and around the pool was good. The buildings are close to other buildings and the kitchen was one floor below my room so I could hear the noise from the neighbouring buildings and from the hotel kitchen from 6am. I could hear noise from the TV of other guests through the walls. I found it peaceful to relax in the restaurant by the pool or sit by the pool. All but 2 of the staff are friendly and provide good service; the 2 female staff at the reception did not smile at all. The breakfast was excellent and the food was prepared promptly. You can negotiate a price for day tours or airport transfer with the tuktuk drivers stations outside the hotel. It would cost more to arrange it through the hotel. The central market and Sorya Shopping Centre are 3-5 mins' walk from the hotel. The staff can point you in the right direction (exit hotel and turn left, then turn left again). The National Museum of Cambodia is 15 mins' walk away and the Royal Palace is 5 more mins' walk from the museum. Tuktuk drivers would be willing to take you there (1 way trip) for USD1.50.

We stayed in #23, a large family room, for five nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was clean and quiet, we always had sufficient hot water, the beds were comfortable, and the breakfasts were delicious. The swimming pool is well-maintained and is even lovelier than shown in the photos. Several excellent restaurants are nearby, a couple within walking distance, and there are always plenty of tuk-tuks waiting just outside the front door. We appreciated the friendliness of the staff, and would recommend The Billabong to anyone looking for a pleasant stay for good value in Phnom Penh.

I stayed at the Billabong three nights and appreciated the tranquility there. The pool is great and the hotel's staff are very friendly. Given its price, the standard room is absolutely ok.
Some criticise the hotel's location, but I think it's either a nice 20-minutes-walk to the main sights or you take a tuk-tuk for as little als USD 1,50.

Room Tip: I was in a standard room on the first floor, located at the end of the open corridor. That turned ou...

Sure, you can get places for a lot cheaper in PP, but do you like the comfort of knowing what you're getting into before you arrive in this hot, crazy, hectic city? If so, stay here. Check out the traveller photos - they seem to be a less 'retouched' than the official pictures. However, having stayed here I can confirm that it is a nice hotel. Everything is very clean. The pool is large and relaxing, with the restaurant overlooking the pool area. Food was good - breakfast is a la carte but is quite plentiful. I also ate a lunch here and it was good. I would recommend you get out and explore some of the great eateries in the city however. But if there is a torrential downpour, rest assured you won't go hungry.

The room was nice, but basic. The bathroom was definitely very basic, but did the trick. There was a large comfortable bed and large flat-screen TV. AC worked well.

I didn't have any issues with front desk staff, as other reviewers have indicated. They were quite nice and helped me store baggage and to print some documents. However, I'm not they type of traveller that shows up at a hotel and expects the concierge to plan my trip for me. Remember that PP is still in that rapid development phase where even many life-long residents don't recognize what their city is becoming. And most people are working too hard to take time to go and tour the city - so don't expect them to know all about every tourist attraction.
