We stayed for 3 nights in Phnom Penn at the Billabong Hotel, selected because of its pool to relax by after a days sightseeing. The pool was lovely and spotlessly clean, with towels provided. The bar however was being renovated at the time and so wasn't available, but looked promising. The renovations also seemed to mean the internet was constantly being unplugged - very frustrating! But even when plugged in was not reliable. The room (we stayed in a deluxe with pool view). It was "ok" but required revamp. The bathrooms were typical wet room style, but quite old and tired with a dingy strip light on the wall and tired fittings. The bedroom itself could do with a repaint and some better lighting / modern furnishings. The hotel is situated on a road with no restaurants, about 1.5km from the riverside and backpacker area of street 172, but tuk-tuks are outside to take you for $2 each way. Overall it served its purpose, but felt like it was in the midst of being done up around us. It was also no where near to the mark of some of the other guest houses we have stayed in for far less. If we were back, we would consider staying somewhere more central to the touristy area for less money.

Pros: nice size room with pool view
Great pool
Great quiet location with Tuk tuks waiting outside so very easy to get most places for $2
Nice breakfast included although it finishes at 9am.
Just 2 blocks from the central market
Cons: air con in room never got cold enough
No mattress protectors so bed sheet constantly came loose.
Absolutely no information in the room about check out times etc or general information including safety.
Intermittent hot water/water pressure.
Got ripped off by one staff member on our first night buying drinks, charged us twice for a drink and lieterally 2 minutes later came back with less money and a fake apology.
The taxi booked through the hotel to the airport at the end of our stay was not an official taxi and cost $3 dollars more than the official taxis. There was a standard price of $9 to the airport which we should have been charged.
Overall a good stay for the money but some tweaking needed

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view

I was holidaying with my 72 year old father and stayed at the Billabong Hotel. Had the best massage of my life in the safety of the hotel. 90 mins $20. Good mixture of local and 'aussie' food at the resturant, with realy good service. Rooms were cleaned daily, pool kept in good condition. There was a mixture of people staying from bsiness/family/couples/backpackers...all well catered for. Walking distance to the markets and palace. tuks tuks outisde the front door. Tour desk within the hotel to advise and arrange tours. Took all our bookings and arranged for bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Repe $12. Will be back.

Room Tip: There are rooms that look ot onto the pool area which were very nice.

Billabong Hotel is excellently located in a not-so-busy street near the Central Market, bus stations, and other places of convenience in Phnom Penh. It is just few minutes away from the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda but out of the way to the main highway leading to the Killing Fields. The front desk was manned 24/7, there is a restaurant and poolside bar serving 'till 10:30 in the evening, the ground is landscaped with small swimming pool. The standard room in the second floor, with poolside view was nice and clean but small ; very limited space to move around The bathroom is small as well; no separate space for shower. Standard bed and mattress plus good air conditioning unit make a restful stay and sound sleep. Breakfast is good with fruits and juice, tea or coffee. Service was superb except for a particular lady in the bar who did not know how to put some smile in her face. Value for money? Very good.

A good place to stay if you're in Phnom Penh for a few nights.

The location is a little out of the way and down a quite dark street at night. Not within any easy walking distance, although the market is just down the road, the roads are not easy to walk down. there are tuktuks right outside of the hotel though all waiting for people from the hotel, so it does make it very easy to get to anywhere you want to go in the city or out for a trip to the killing fields.

The rooms are nice, I had one on the first floor, so no balcony but had views out over the pool (which is very nice, but not as big as I imagined from the picture!). The room had both a fan and air conditioning, which is always nice to have the option. There was a minibar in the room, with prices the same (for beer at least!) as down at the poolside bar, which is pretty cheap! So that was nice and very convenient.

The poolside bar is nice, serving a good range of drinks and good prices, as well well cooked food for dinner and lunch. The lok lak and amok are both good options for a taste of Cambodian cuisine. Breakfast is good, food cooked to order but there is toast and fruit juices to help yourselves to (as well as vegemite and skippy peanut butter as its an Aussie place!).

The pool is but is still a good size and is very nice for a swim, especially in the heat of the city.
