“Its pros and cons”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

The hotel service was satisfactory, but it wasnt the best that we have encountered. I love the bedsheets! silk materials, very soft and smooth, good for sleep haha! But, i was not so satisfied with the breakfast, as each of us could only order 1 set of breakfast which for me was not filling enough! haha. Better to bring your own shower gel and shampoo also. Location is walking distance to central market ! :)

We stayed as a family of five at the beginning of April and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The staff were friendly, especially Mr Sona and spoke reasonable English. We paid $80 per night for one room that fit all of us - one large bed, two day beds made up to beds and an extra brought in. All the beds were very hard but that seems to be the norm in all the places we've stayed in Asia. I loved this room, even though it was on the 3rd floor as it really was huge - we didn't feel at all cramped even with the five of us.
The air con really struggled with the heat and we had it on all the time we were in the room along with the pedestal fan. Even then it was pretty hot.
The bathroom had a shower at one end with a shower curtain so it wasn't really a wet bathroom like some of the other rooms. The water pressure wasn't great with the water cutting out around the third shower, but comes back. Also we had to be careful how much toilet paper went into the toilet - again common in many Asian toilets.
The breakfast was good although the same every day and it was served in a lovely outside area beside the pool.
We absolutely loved the pool, great size and the kids had a wonderful time in it. It was so nice to jump in after being out in the heat which we found to be extremely oppressive! The atmosphere was very casual and relaxed and the location was very convenient being only a couple of minutes walk to the Central Markets and the shopping mall.

Good hotel - it's well-located close to the Central Market and not too far from the riverfront and its various attractions. The breakfast was okay and we didn't eat any other meals at the hotel. The pool was great and was a really nice way to cool off after a day traipsing 'round the capital. The rooms were alright - small and with wet-room style bathrooms. I would've preferred a proper shower cubicle, as the water got absolutely everywhere when you showered, but generally it was fine. I'd recommend this hotel as a decent budget option, unless you're particularly fussy.

Our stay at The Billabong Hotel was good and bad:

The Bad:
First of all make sure to check their website out and read about the bathroom before booking. We booked through Expedia and bathroom was listed as shower. What we got was a "wet floor" bathroom. This means the water guess everywhere in the bathroom which wouldn't have been such a big issue if the drainage wouldn't clog causing floods all three time. They came and fixed it but next day it happened again and again. It takes at least 2 hours to drain so if you need to use the toilet you will be walking in soapy water. This type of bathroom also causes rust on the garbage bin and mold on the walls.

Second semi issue was housekeeping. Housekeeping only fixes the bed, restock the towels and clean the bathroom and empty the garbage. They don't seem to sweep the floors as there's dust and hair ( ours are short yet we see long hair). Confusing how this can be repeatedly as there seems to be multiple housekeepers cleaning the room. Maybe one thinks the other did it?

Third issue was requesting a blanket. We had two beds in our room but only one bed was made up. Asked housekeeping repeatedly for a blanket, even talked to the English speaking one and learned the Cambodian word. Took three tries and two nights to get it and that was through asking a staff at breakfast. But the blanket he gave us was not really a blanket at all. It was so heavy and more like something you put on the window instead. We ended up not using it and purchasing a blanket ourselves.

The Good:
Staff was extremely friendly and quick to help. Always smiling (except some of the housekeepers who seems to always be grumpy) and responsive. They helped us arrange visa for Vietnam, ordered bus tickets, tuk tuk and even offered advise for how much it should cost. Almost all staff speak English (excluding most of housekeeping).

Breakfast had many selections and varies in flavor (the same food) depending on the cook (or?) but overall was great. Getting food was a bit slow though. It seems like they have only one cook or something as it can take up to 40 minutes to get our food.

Overall a great place due to location (five minute walk to Sorya shipping center and few more minutes to Central Market) and staff. Just make sure to read about the bathroom.

We stayed here in March for 3 nights. The Aussie owner Larry was obliging. The family rooms were spacious and clean and the pool a nice retreat after a day of sightseeing. The $2 cocktail specials each day were also a great way to unwind and the breakfast was okay. I don't really recommend the food here which is not as nice as other local restaurants. The local staff were friendly enough but didn't have a great command of English so couldn't help much re advice on local sites, places and services. In all we had a nice stay.

Room Tip: Rooms near the pool look nice. Family rooms on the other side!

Nice hotel: clean rooms, friendly staff, good location, very nice pool with poolbar with decent priced coctails and food. Would definitely go there again!

One of the best things to do in PP were the Killingfields and the Genoside Museum, although I had thought I wouldn't want to go there. Especially the fields are a rough thing to do, the stories of the audio tour were rough. I started to cry as I saw the tree against which they had smashed the babies heads. I bought a book on the Polt Pot regime, because I was astonished at how little I know. They killed 3 million people out of 8 million, just in a few years. And people say the nazis were brutal and effective. Horrible.

And the Animal Rescue Centre where we did a daytrip with the Beetlenut-tous was great! Nice couple with good information on the animals. And the lady can cook, great food too!
Do a reservation at least a week in advance. I called the night before and somehow got us the last two sets, but 6 coules who just came to the Lazy Gecko Hostel in hope of a place didn't get one.

The nightmarket on the riverside was also nice, decently priced good local food!

Nice hotel with helpful staff small rooms but functional. Breakfast included with a good selection and very relaxing by the pool. Central to markets and activities. Walking distance most of the time. Once your back at the hotel you would never know the city is out there. Would definitely stay again.
