When I arrived at the Rambutan I was surprised to find myself in a building site: an unfinished entrance (and safety hazard), the stairs being painted and the water in the swimming pool was a strange, cloudy, deep shade of green. Nothing in my booking or on their website suggested that it was unfinished. The warm welcome and reassurances offered gave me some hope.
Doubt returned with the absence of a safe in the room and no bulb in the bathroom. Both were rectified although the portability of the safe raised a question. My room had possibly not been occupied previously and obviously not adequately checked. Later I noticed the absence of soap by the wash hand basin - rectifying this was a bigger challenge.
The decor is minimalist and attractive although it makes one wonder whether something is missing or just not intended. Chairs were produced for the balcony after two days and two reminders - not to the staff, but directly to the owners. An attractive wooden screen that shields the bathtub on the balcony disappeared without comment on my second day. A dream, perhaps, for an exhibitionist. Rooms have bare floors and no rugs.
Fruit juice was available at breakfast on only one of three mornings. I was somewhat surprised when checking out to find that this incurred a charge as did 'extra coffee' at breakfast. By then I'd given up asking any questions or expecting effective action.
The owners are experienced hoteliers; they have a sister hotel and resort in Siem Reap (Golden Banana Boutique Hotel and Resort). It's difficult to understand their slow and poor response to simple requests. Many of the pictures on the Rambutan website suggest a finished product. It's not.
The staff are unfailingly courteous. The wifi works well.
Definitely not recommended until the owners/managers get themselves organised in some pretty basic ways.
