The Golden River Palace Guesthouse was a fairly basic hotel located near the river and Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. The room was decently sized and relatively clean, though the floor was dusty when we arrived. This is more of a backpacker accommodation, so nothing fancy there. The location is great to get to all the bars and restaurants on the river, as well as the Roayl Palace and National Museum. The staff were friendly, though one guy who was there most didn't speak any English. However, what he lacked in language skills he made up for in cheer and enthusiasm! Another staff member was very helpful by calling the bus company we took after we forgot something on the bus. He then flagged a tuk tuk and gave him directions to ensure we got there. We were very thankful for his help!

Paid £11 a night for double room with a/c. Arrived mid afternoon and was checked into room 001. The only room on ground floor. The view was into an alley and the room was very disappointing and nothing like the pictures displayed on hotels.com. The manager was not on site but we emailed him and explained we weren't happy: the manager was very helpful and moved us to a much better room on the second night on the first floor.
The wifi is excellent and the second room was good. Well located and good customer service to put things that had gone wrong right.

We had received confirmation of our booking for two doubles rooms. When we arrived at the Golden River Palace Guesthouse in 35 degree heat after a full days travel from Chau Doc in Vietnam we were told the rooms were not available and they could send us to their "partner" hotel just around the corner for the same price.

Even though we had read about this method of sending travellers to substandard accommodation we forgot as we were hot and tired and just accepted it on face value.

The Modern City Hotel on the surface was ok, but was not up to standard, aircon didn't work in one room and was poor in the other, windows didn't shut, toilet door didn't shut etc etc.

Also, breakfast was meant to be included but was not available at the second hotel.

Please note: We did not see the rooms at the Golden River Palace Guesthouse so can not comment on the standard of those.

Room Tip: Do not accept a referral to another hotel. If you do check that the aircon works, doors close, noisy bars across the road and if the hotel is used for "other" purposes.

Good location, infront of market, walking distance from bus station. We stayed Overnight. Aircon is good and wifi connection is fast. Drawback, no restaurant inside the hotel and no elevator. Not good for senior guest climbing upstairs. Although staff very helpful in carrying our luggages.

Overall okey because the manager owner is very friendly, polite and offer help to check our pick up service on our way back to Siem Reap.

Room Tip: Take lower floors when travelling with kids or senior family members

Rooms tiled to half way- strange decor in a bedroom- not sure it works. Rooms small. Air con, good. Bathroom good- modern, white and clean. Fridge good. TV reception sketchy. Location good. Staff nice and helpful. Having no window, isn't too bad, until you want to know if you have woken up in the middle of the night or the morning, or if it is raining in outside or not. There's not even a fake window onto hallway so you really cant tell anything. In a good location, 5 minute walk to river front.
