“Beautiful decor and thats it”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We stayed in room 4 of the Governors House. The plus point of the hotel is that it is aesthetically very pleasing.
The bad points were that our room had no proper shower nor door to the bathroom.
The staff had no training whatsoever, on asking for a beer at the bar I had to open the bottle myself. The pool was green (unlike the photos) - I would not have attempted a dip!
Breakfast as mentioned in previous posts was laboured, having to ask several times for some scrambled eggs. The Belgian owner appeared to be lighting incense candles around his fine decor while Rome burned is all I can say.
We were unable to get a bill for our stay as they had run out of paper.
The Cambodian staff I have to say were trying their very best to please. It is disappointing to be greeted at the front desk to hear all the things that have gone wrong and the blame being put on them by the Belgian owners.
It would also have been nice to ask how our stay was when leaving by the owners....despite them being on the desk not a word said as they dealt with problems.
This place needs a hotelier which it regrettably does not have and I would avoid until it gets one.

Hello

Thank you for your constructive feedback.

We are newly opened and hitches along the way do happen unfortunately. We are working towards having a top notch service and team.

As we are in a soft opening period, our prices are extremely competitive, and below 50% of rack rate, hoping to train our staff on the job, and have our guests be clement towards our hickups.

Best regards

Alain

I use to travel a lot for bussiness in Cambodia!
I try this time the number one from Trip advisor and was really really Dissapointed. The location is close to nothing.
The room decoration are ok but the service was not ok for this price!
Prefere to stay elsewhere for the same price like the Plantation or the Pavillon.

Dear Truechick,

The Paris Attic room, is called as such, in order to let our customers know that it is a small room. Actually a very small room. It is on the 3d floor, (since we only have 3 floors up)
Please note that the 3$ for the bottle is for the Evian water (imported from France).
We will be installing soon a door to the toilet, as we have received few feedback from our guests that prefer to have this feature.
As we mentionned before, during our soft opening, our rates were extremely competitive, in order for us to improve our service, and hope for the clemency of the client.
Sorry that they were not up to par yet.
We are getting there.
Thank you for having stayed with us.

Best regards

Alain

The hotel is stunning and unique. The pool and restaurant area are beautiful. It would have been one of our best stays in South East Asia had it not been for the problems we had at the end.
The service was generally poor when the belgian ownners were not around. It seems as if te training of the staff was behind the problem. The big exception was Sam who seems to do a bit of everything from cooking to carrying lugague. He was extremely professional (even more so than the owners) and tried hard to apologise for the hotel's mistakes.

Apart from minor details like getting orders wrong and having to wait almost an hour and a half for breakfast, the main problem was with our checkout.

The receptionist, who spoke poor English, made several mistakes on our hotel bill. When we had already checkout and half the group had left the manager asked us to pay the difference. We were not in a position to do so as the paying party had left and the manager could not show us any receipt of what had been paid. In order to convince us he very unprofessionally used the strategy to say that the poor recepcionist would have to work weeks to make up for it or be fired. These are internal issues that should not be used to make a client feel bad. He was also very stern and rude with the recepcionist in front of us and very unapologetic to us.

Clearly half the problem was that she did not have proper training or supervision, and this fault rests with the owners.

We paid what we could and left. We left disillusioned with what should be a fantastic hotel.

Thank you for your feedback.
We are happy that you liked our hotel and the design.

Unfortunately, we are still in the stage of training, and mistakes are hapening during that process. I agree that the customer doesnt need to be facing those mistakes, but we are all trying our best, and hopefully within few weeks, service will be up to par with the high standard of our hotel.

Yes, in your case, our recepetionist, who printed you the full check out bill, made a mistake and charged you a lower amount then that showing. The full expenses and bill was detailed, and clear.
Our mistake, from our staff, who of course doesn't pay for it,

We hope to have the chance to welcome you again, and that you will be nicely impressed by the improvement of the service.

On previous trips to Phnom Penh I used to stay at the Intercontinental. This time around, I decided to give this new place a try after reading the reviews. I was not disappointed at all. Being new not all tax drivers were familiar with the location. It's a US$9 taxi ride from the airport or US$7 by tuk tuk. The room at the top of the stairs (le petite reporter) was cosy and comfortable. Wifi reception in room wasn't too good however in the lobby area and on second floor it worked well. I had an enjoyable breakfast in quiet surroundings. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent. The service was attentive and unobtrusive. Staff and owner are very friendly and offered good advice on local sights. Good, charming ambience. Overall, an excellent experience. Will definitely return.

Room Tip: If room space isn't an issue you can go for the le petite room which is cosy and comfortable.

We've stayed 4 nights at Governor's hotel and the place is really beautiful. Divided in 3 (or 4?) levels, with a lamp hanging from the roof to the reception area. Each level with great deco and ideal for reading, sitting around etc. The design is great and the choice of the background music was excellent. Very relaxing, comfortable and quiet. Breakfast included a delicious home made marmalade and it's by the swimming pool. The hotel also has an excellent spa room. Great staff. Just so you are not surprised, no doors to separate bedroom from bathroom. So if it bothers you, that's how it is. Finally, the hotel has a front garden that the owner wishes to renovate and take more advantage of. We're sure this will add value to it.
Well done for this recently opened hotel!
Location is not centric but only 5 minutes away by tuk-tuk from the Quay, the National museum, Royal Palace. Bunnat, the driver of tuk-tuk N°3 was our guide to Choeung Ek and other places and he's just the nicest person. He is in charge of his 5 brothers and sisters but he would like to continue studying so if you could help him with a tip here and there...
Frankly speaking, great hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms are different. We were in number 2 (Sichan) and it was very good. The pictures were not ou...

This hotel is simply my dream hotel in Phnom Penh! After staying in many boutique hotels all over the planet this is arguably one of the best in the world. This 12 bedroom former governors' house was meticulously planned, designed and decorated using only the finest materials known to man. Every square meter of the hotel was reviewed for function and decadence. Each light switch was strategically placed, every board location studied, tables custom made specifically for the hotel, even the breakfast area were lowered to offer better views on the pool.
The rooms are stunning and decorated with the most detailed attention ever seen as well the public areas which is decorated using fine furnishings and light fixtures.
I can't wait to stay again which will be by the end of the year.
Due to it's offering (particulary the size and homely feeling) it is a really unique proposition in Phnom Penh. I really haven't come across anything similar before and will no not be looking to stay anywhere else when in town!

The Governors House was our first accommodation over a 2 week stay in Cambodia.
We were picked up from the airport (a little expensive at USD 25) and taken to a little haven in busy Phnom Phen.
The staff are very friendly and accommodating - though we didn't meet any Cambodians who were not gracious and welcoming!
We stayed in a room called the Winston which had an awesome marble shower room with a rain shower. The bedroom felt a little small but beautifully decorated.
We had breakfast and dinner once both of which were well prepared and filling.
We liked being away from the main tourist area as it meant we explored more and got some good exercise hunting out our next place for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
