My friend and I planned to walk to a place close to our hotel but he saw Deco on TA so we went. We tend to eat early so we had no problem with no reservation as their crowd starts later. The design is quite elegant and nicely appointed with only about 8-10 tables inside & several more outside in a building that appeared to be relatively new.
The service was immediately attentive and very professional especially by a young lady who was a university student/graduate and spoke English very well. For Phnom Penh, I would say the service was extraordinary.
The menu is presented on a plain brown paper sheet which also serves as the placemat. There are only about 6 starters and 8 mains with also some side dishes. We both started with the Kampot (apparently the region of Cambodia known for its crab meat) Crab Cakes w/sherry mayonnaise. They were ok but the crab meat was not a highlight in the taste (too much filler?) and it could have used some heat in the sherry mayo which was only painted across the plate for presentation purposes.
My friend was not hungry so he had a second starter of Whiskey Cured Salmon w/honey mustard and rye bread as his main---OK. I had the Poached Rockfish served on a bed of Crushed Potatoes (just short of being mashed) and topped by a Herb Salad & Sauce---this was excellent, perfectly poached and presented. A side of poached/sautéed spinach was also perfect.
We brought our own special wine and there was a $10 corkage charge.
We shared a dessert of Sticky Toffee Pudding. It had distinctive flavor but I can't tell you whether it was banana or liqueur or something else but it was absolutely delicious.
At $40 for food only and without the corkage, it is on the high side for PP but it was a very good experience for our last dinner in PP.
Congratulations to the ownership for its very well trained service staff---the best for our meals this trip.
