“Nice pool area - old and smelly room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2007

We got a low price for our two nights stay, so I wont complain too much. But if you want a nice room, you should look elsewhere. Another thing that may be annoying is smoking allowance in the breakfast area.

Wew stayed here for two nights as part of a tour. Coming in from the airport at night, the first sights of Cambodia are depressing. Looks like rubble everywhere and not a lot of lights. Coming up to the Cambodiana, it's like going to another world. Flashy, modern and very impressive. This feeling continues inside in the lobby and everywhere else you look.

However, things change once you get in the room. Somehow it all looks rather run down. The bathtub had a hole in the side. This was on the outside part, not in the tub, yet the floor flooded when taking a shower. There was a safe in the room that seemed quite secure, but it wasn't attached to anything! I was able to lift it with one arm. I guess that, for a poor, developing country like Cambodia, it was pretty good, but not for the North American prices they charge.

As someone else mentioned, they have loud music poolside, which disturbs anyone in the north wing (the no-smoking section). However, it didn't go on till very late, fortunately.

Good location, very good breakfast. Get up at dawn and go outside by the river to watch the sun come up.

I stayed at the Cambodiana for 3 nights in early January 2007. It is a good hotel, with large rooms, decently decorated, and efficient staff. Wireless internet access is good too, and a plus. I was lucky enough to be given a room on the top (club) floor despite booking online at a discounted rate which gave me access to the separate club breakfast executive room (imposing views over the river from the top floor of the hotel).
It is a good 4 star, there were doing some renovations in the lobby but nothing major. I'd recommend it as it is 'luxury' accommodation and good value for money (I paid USD$68 per night).

Location is also attractive, very close to the Mekong River promenade and historical sights in this interesting and dilapidated city.

This huge hotel has seen better days. Its location is OK, though not great. The breakfast is fine. Be careful of rooms overlooking the river, as they also overlook the pool deck, where loud music entertains very sparse crowds on the weekends. The river views are not so spectacular anyway. I also recommend against rooms over the bar, as the music there is also loud and goes until quite late. After one sleepless night, we changed rooms -- the first room they offered us was in almost the same spot as the first room, one floor up, so we had to try several rooms before finding one that was quiet. Non-smoking rooms are only on the river side of the hotel, but we did manage to find a quiet, smoking room that did not smell of smoke. I would be inclined next time to tr one of the refurbished older, smaller hotels in a better location.

Large , no risk, adequate hotel that seems to be going through some substantial renovations.
When we arrived in late November the reception area was receiving major works and we were upgraded to Club floor where we enjoyed a very spacious , comfortable and quiet room.

We saw the excellent newly completed reception area on our last day as we were leaving and if the rest of the renovations are as good it should lift this large slightly tired hotel back up the scale.
In an excellent location within easy walking distance to all attractions it does seem to attract mostly Asians

Dining room adequate for breakfast but certainly not inviting for lunch or dinner (however believe this is next for renovation) ……. We found an fantastic restaurant in Phnom Penh called Pacharan which believe it or not is a Spanish Restaurant and on the other end of the block from FCC which is also excellent………. We also found all the tuk tuk drivers very pleasant whether we used them or not . If you find a good driver, arrange to meet and use him on a regular basis and you will find them very reliable at all times.
This hotel is a safe comfortable bet in a great location but without having any particular character.

Location: The hotel is in a good enough location - ten minutes walk from the riverside cafes, bars and restaurants, five minutes from the Royal Palace.

Atmosphere: A large, pretty soulless place, but what should one expect from a hotel of this size? It seems to cater to well heeled Asians rather that Westerners who nowadays go for a. boutique with those special touches, b. glamour a la Raffles (or c. backpacker: cheap, but does the job)

Service: Polite, but again, caters to Asians wanting cars, chauffeured guides etc. They looked at me like I was a nutter when I said I wanted to hire a bicycle.

Breakfast: Stock up: continental, American, Asian - they've got the lot. I had three courses.

Price: The rack rates seem steep. I booked through my hotel in Siem Reap who got me a good rate of $65 pernight and then I was upgraded to a Club Suite (large room, view of the unremarkable river). $2 per item from the mini bar compared to the US/ Europe is cheap but when you can get a beer over the road for $1 and fancy a walk, why not head out? Ditto the internet services and call charges. There's a good place over the road.

There’s nothing really wrong with the Hotel Cambodiana. During my four day stay at the hotel in October 2006, I had a room that was clean and the staff I dealt with were generally friendly. But, overall, the general quality of the hotel wasn’t as good as I had been led to believe by reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere.

My main criticism of this hotel is that it is in dire need of some repairs and upgrades. In a hotel like this, there really shouldn’t have been buckets in the hallway outside my room catching water dripping from the ceiling. The hallway was also dark because some lights weren't working. And, although I suppose that it’s inevitable that cigarette burns will appear in carpets of even the best hotels, when the burns number in the dozens it really is time to replace the carpet. Of the three elevators in the hotel, usually only two were functioning.

The “great views” of the Mekong cited by some of the other reviews deserve a comment. The hotel does indeed overlook the river, but between my room and the river was what appeared to be the hotel’s maintenance facility and a roof covered with chimneys and air conditioning units. This may not be an issue on the top (and more expensive) floors, but it certainly detracts from the view from the lower floors.

A word of advice: don’t even think of eating a meal other than breakfast in the hotel restaurant. It’s overpriced, and the food isn’t that great. Rather take a $2 taxi ride to one of the many riverside restaurants where you can gorge yourself on meals that will cost you $3 - $5 for a main course.

This Cambodiana Hotel seems to be popular with business people, NGO officials, and others on expense accounts. It is adequate, but unspectacular. It’s not a bargain and it’s not a particularly well appointed hotel, but it isn’t unpleasant either.

  • Liked — It's in Phnom Penh
  • Disliked — The decaying building and furhishings
  • Tips/Secrets — Eat at the Pink Elephant Pub or one of its neighbors on the riverfront. Good food, great prices.
