How can you call the staff rude?! This is undoubtably one of the treasures of Phonom Penh. The staff are genuinely helpful and friendly, offering advice rather than a sales pitch, and the other guests were easy going. The rooms though basic, are clean and definately secure, the food is great, the beer cold, the atmosphere unbeatable. A great spot to spend a few nights (the one fault it has is it's far to easy to stay another night in the hammocks!)

With recommendations of the infamous Capitol ringing in our ears, we were shocked to see the state of this supposed "travellers haven" and promptly jumped back into our taxi. We ended up at Happy G/H and were well pleased after 16 hours on a boat.

Stay there!

I stayed at the happy guest house in Phnom Penh and also their sister guesthouse in Siem Reap and loved both of them. The place is a great place to chill out, the staff were always accomodating and the good food and beer made it hard to leave! For $4 a night it was a bargain and was a great place to meet like minded travellers

I was shocked to read the other 2 reviews of this place and only bothered to write my own as the experience I enjoyed there was so far removed from these other accounts as to make me wonder whether it was a different place (and it isn't!). I enjoyed all aspects of my week-long stay at Happy - the staff were the friendliest I met throughout my time in Cambodia (which is saying something), the rooms were clean and comfortable, the food spot on, and the internet speed in the attached cafe did NOT make me bellow in rage.... a first in Asia. The only 2 complaints I could possibly raise were the hordes of mosquitoes after dark (well, it is situated on a lake!) and the fact that, due to the provision of extremely cheap smoke by the friendly staff, it is a very hard place to leave. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone who would care to listen, it was undoubtedly the best place I stayed in Cambodia. A particular shout out to phnom, a great guy who works at Happy and surely is the reason behind its name!

Do not, under any circumstances use Happy Travel, their internet café or stay in their attached hostel (Happy Guesthouse and Restaurant) in the Boengkak lake area of Phnom Penh . Without exception while in Cambodia, I found the people to be wonderful and very friendly and I always felt relatively safe. Happy Travel was the one exception. I visited them and inquired about hiring a minibus to take me and a group to the south of the country; I returned several minutes later and told the owner that we did not need to the minibus, but the staff refused to contact him. When he finally emerged, he demanded 45 USD for his troubles and when I refused to pay, he blocked the road with a group of his staff, followed me to my hostel and threatened to "break my eye and face" until I paid him. I eventually did, as he was, by Cambodian standards, a hulking guy.

Most people in Cambodia are wonderful and kind and so are many businesses. Do yourself a favor and don't stay here!
