“Family Friendly Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

My family and I (2 adults and 2 kids aged 9 and 3) spent two lovely days at the Monument Hotel. It was very central, being only a 15 minute walk to the Palace and that great park full of fun playstructures. Aside from being central, it also had great ammenaties including a lovely and clean pool that was a hit with both of my kids and a really cool cafe on the roof top that provided great views of the City. All this and at a reasonable price, I would defiately stay here again.

Phnom Penh is one of the places you want to be careful about where you stay. Quality and safety can very greatly and even some high end hotels can have their share of problems. Fortunately, the Monument Hotel offers both at a great price to boot.

The hotel is located a few blocks to the Southeast of the independence monument. It's within walking distance of the Royal Palace and the famous river walk if you are courageous enough to brave the Phnom Penh traffic on foot. It may be a litte far to stumble back drunk to so be sure to carry a card with the hotel name, address and phone number in Khmer with you. This is important as the cabs and tuk tuk drivers frequently don't know the hotel by name. There is also some restaurants and a very well stocked supermarket located nearby.

The staff are very friendly and full of helpful advice. I arrived early so they stored all my luggage and a few of my valuables in the hotel safe so I could go out and see the city. The room was slightly dirty but in Phnom Penh, this room would be considered clean enough to perform surgery. All the electrics worked as expected and there were spare power ports above the bed. The bed itself was extremely comfy and I slept like a rock. The AC worked great and kept the room a nice temp at all times. The bathroom was clean and the shower worked fine, although there was a fan above the shower which seemed to be the source for most of the dust in the room. The balcony that I had didn't have much of a view but it was still a great place to hang out and talk with people.

The hotel also has a great pool in the front courtyard. Nothing like taking a refreshing dip to escape the Cambodian heat and mosquitos. There was also a full service bar at the pool so you could order drinks and they would bring it poolside to you. In addition, there is also a little restaurant on top of the hotel where breakfast is served. The view is limited but is still interesting. Breakfast was continental style and was quite good.

Overall: This is an excellent choice for a low cost hotel in Phnom Penh. Last tip: The best barber shop in the city is located a block north of the hotel so stay here if you need a haircut.

Room Tip: The value of the balcony rooms is debatable. If you need a nice view, a balcony room is not worth th...

A friend and I recently stayed at the hotel and found the service and rooms exceptional.

We arrived a day late, and the hotel was able to give us the night we missed at no extra cost.

The facilities are modest but fantastic. Although we didn't use the pool it seemed small but inviting.

The bar and restaurant upstairs was great, however the service for food was a little slow.

Any minor qualms we had were easy. To overlook, great secure location, great rooms, terrific staff and service that went above and beyond.

I think this hotel would suit just about anyone and is a must stay in Phnom Penh.

PS it is close to the equinox bar which is a great venue.

We stayed here with our two sons. The pool was a real plus and the view from the upstairs lounge was gorgeous at sunset. Our room (302) was fantastic, comfortable bed, nice little balcony. Our kids room (304) was nice to look at but smelled so strongly of mildew that even the citronella oil burners couldn't cover it up. The hotel has a well publicized child safe policy which although aimed at protecting girls under 18 has the additional effect of keeping away the elderly ex-pats with their much younger "girlfriends." For a $5 donation to one of the hotel's sponsored anti-child trafficking charities, guests can put their hand print on the wall. It was nice to stay at such a conscientious establishment.

Room Tip: Avoid room 304.

Hi travelingonward,
Thanks for the feedback and for the great review. We do pride ourselves in being supportive of all NGO's that support the elimination of human trafficking and thus we like to think its in our DNA to simply not entertain people who are looking for anything that indirectly might support these activities. The mildew thing you mentioned we are looking into it so hopefully sooner rather than later that should be taken care of as well. Thanks again for staying with us and all the best.
Kind regards,
Sounly

Beautiful boutique hotel with lovely rooms and nice touches around like the oil burners. Staff was helpful and always very friendly. Layout of the room is spacious contemporary and well furnished. Breakfast is very good so I recommend to have it there.

We decided to stay here after some great reviews on Tripadvisor and it did not disappoint.

In a city that is crowded, busy, impersonal, and filled with the unexpected, it was really wonderful to find such a spacious, tranquil, welcoming oasis. The decor is atmospheric, the amenities are comfortable, and the service is unique. From the moment of my arrival (four hours early) to the moment of my departure (two hours late) I was treated as an old friend.

Apart from the lovely rooms with top-class, brand-new fittings, the salt water pool were the highlights of my stay.

They have some special mattresses which are really really comfortable loved the sleep..

Overall thumbs up !

Everyone complaining about the stairs obviously doesn't know how houses and hotels are structured in Phnom Penh- stairs are expected, and a lift is not part of what the Monument offer and therefor should not be expected from them. The staff carry your bags for you, and on request will carry them back down. You're in Cambodia and you're seriously not gonna walk up twenty steps? Come on...,
The rooftop breakfast is lovely, basic but a great atmosphere.
The room itself looked like the photo, but the aircon didn't reach the entire room and our window was overlooking a neighbours window therefore we felt we had no privacy (there were blinds but they had a gap in the middle.
Our main problem was with the bathroom, and drainage, which again might be a common Phnom Penh problem (prior to this I lived in a guesthouse for 3 weeks in the same city). Our bathroom honestly absolutely stank of hot urine, and although effort was made originally to light a lemongrass oil burner, the favour was not repeated. We only stayed 3 nights so it wasn't worth me mentioning and having to get settled then unsettled again. The hot water in the shower lasted about 3 minutes, but again, in Phnom Penh you usually expect cold showers.
The hallways were lit though, which was really nice.
Our tv was old and didn't work on most channels, and the reception we had was pitiful. However, I'm not one to complain as we weren't there for tv, and the room had fantastic high speed wifi.

Also, being there for three weeks prior, never in my life have I expected to pay $18 for a round trip to the killing fields, or $5 to Russian markets and back, as the staff recommend at the front desk printed on a flyer...Riverside, also, should cost no more than $3 for a round trip for 2 people...it's honestly less than 5 mins in tuk tuk. I know they have experienced drivers with licences and rego etc, but I have tuk tucked with other experienced registered licensed drivers and paid a lot less than what they recommend.
One of their tuk tuk drivers was asking $8 to the airport. I got him down to $5, which usually means its worth even less...and more often than not I'm easy saying "it's only one more dollar"- but it all adds up and it's upsetting that you're getting ripped off all the time every day for travel that you need to be doing.
The location is good but only if you use a reasonable tuk tuk.

All up it was a good hotel at a good price but I obviously can't rate it any better than average/good.

Hi ErinJane84,
Thank you for staying with us and for providing your feedback. We apologize for the inconvenience you had with the bathroom and we have taken note of it and will try our best to see how we can mitigate this. Bathroom drains in some rooms on one side of the hotel sometimes give problems with the throwback from the drain but that is usually taken care of with our regular maintenance every month. We will however look at it again.
Thanks again for staying with us and we hope our signature beds at least made up for some of the bathroom inconvenience you had to put up with.
All the best.
