“Hotel With A Conscience”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

We stayed here with our two sons. The pool was a real plus and the view from the upstairs lounge was gorgeous at sunset. Our room (302) was fantastic, comfortable bed, nice little balcony. Our kids room (304) was nice to look at but smelled so strongly of mildew that even the citronella oil burners couldn't cover it up. The hotel has a well publicized child safe policy which although aimed at protecting girls under 18 has the additional effect of keeping away the elderly ex-pats with their much younger "girlfriends." For a $5 donation to one of the hotel's sponsored anti-child trafficking charities, guests can put their hand print on the wall. It was nice to stay at such a conscientious establishment.

Room Tip: Avoid room 304.

Hi travelingonward,
Thanks for the feedback and for the great review. We do pride ourselves in being supportive of all NGO's that support the elimination of human trafficking and thus we like to think its in our DNA to simply not entertain people who are looking for anything that indirectly might support these activities. The mildew thing you mentioned we are looking into it so hopefully sooner rather than later that should be taken care of as well. Thanks again for staying with us and all the best.
Kind regards,
Sounly

Beautiful boutique hotel with lovely rooms and nice touches around like the oil burners. Staff was helpful and always very friendly. Layout of the room is spacious contemporary and well furnished. Breakfast is very good so I recommend to have it there.

We decided to stay here after some great reviews on Tripadvisor and it did not disappoint.

In a city that is crowded, busy, impersonal, and filled with the unexpected, it was really wonderful to find such a spacious, tranquil, welcoming oasis. The decor is atmospheric, the amenities are comfortable, and the service is unique. From the moment of my arrival (four hours early) to the moment of my departure (two hours late) I was treated as an old friend.

Apart from the lovely rooms with top-class, brand-new fittings, the salt water pool were the highlights of my stay.

They have some special mattresses which are really really comfortable loved the sleep..

Overall thumbs up !

Everyone complaining about the stairs obviously doesn't know how houses and hotels are structured in Phnom Penh- stairs are expected, and a lift is not part of what the Monument offer and therefor should not be expected from them. The staff carry your bags for you, and on request will carry them back down. You're in Cambodia and you're seriously not gonna walk up twenty steps? Come on...,
The rooftop breakfast is lovely, basic but a great atmosphere.
The room itself looked like the photo, but the aircon didn't reach the entire room and our window was overlooking a neighbours window therefore we felt we had no privacy (there were blinds but they had a gap in the middle.
Our main problem was with the bathroom, and drainage, which again might be a common Phnom Penh problem (prior to this I lived in a guesthouse for 3 weeks in the same city). Our bathroom honestly absolutely stank of hot urine, and although effort was made originally to light a lemongrass oil burner, the favour was not repeated. We only stayed 3 nights so it wasn't worth me mentioning and having to get settled then unsettled again. The hot water in the shower lasted about 3 minutes, but again, in Phnom Penh you usually expect cold showers.
The hallways were lit though, which was really nice.
Our tv was old and didn't work on most channels, and the reception we had was pitiful. However, I'm not one to complain as we weren't there for tv, and the room had fantastic high speed wifi.

Also, being there for three weeks prior, never in my life have I expected to pay $18 for a round trip to the killing fields, or $5 to Russian markets and back, as the staff recommend at the front desk printed on a flyer...Riverside, also, should cost no more than $3 for a round trip for 2 people...it's honestly less than 5 mins in tuk tuk. I know they have experienced drivers with licences and rego etc, but I have tuk tucked with other experienced registered licensed drivers and paid a lot less than what they recommend.
One of their tuk tuk drivers was asking $8 to the airport. I got him down to $5, which usually means its worth even less...and more often than not I'm easy saying "it's only one more dollar"- but it all adds up and it's upsetting that you're getting ripped off all the time every day for travel that you need to be doing.
The location is good but only if you use a reasonable tuk tuk.

All up it was a good hotel at a good price but I obviously can't rate it any better than average/good.

Hi ErinJane84,
Thank you for staying with us and for providing your feedback. We apologize for the inconvenience you had with the bathroom and we have taken note of it and will try our best to see how we can mitigate this. Bathroom drains in some rooms on one side of the hotel sometimes give problems with the throwback from the drain but that is usually taken care of with our regular maintenance every month. We will however look at it again.
Thanks again for staying with us and we hope our signature beds at least made up for some of the bathroom inconvenience you had to put up with.
All the best.

We stayed here for a few nights and loved it! It's very close to all the government buildings and Aussie embassy and only a short tuk tuk to Royal Palace or riverfront.

The staff were fantastic! We asked for a late checkout on the last day and they were only too happy to oblige, they also tried to find me a belt to wear when I forgot to bring mine!

Location is nice and quiet and in the safer part of PP, we also loved the style of the hotel and the beds were AMAZING!

I'd highly recommend to anyone wanting a nice place to stay in PP.

Great hotel at a reasonable price, close to all the tourist attractions. The hotel is clean, welcoming and the staff are lovely. Great having a pool and air conditioning and a fan that works well in Phnom Penhs humidity. I'd highly recommend this hotel, we are headed back there for another stay this week!

I stayed at the Monument as I got a great deal on Agoda. I had a large, lovely and clean room with a four poster bed. The staff are really lovely and attentive. The breakfast is good too and the cook remembered my order every morning which was a sweet touch. I used one of their tuk tuks for two days - Vireak (meyvireak@yahoo.com or 855012456744) and he was SO friendly and got me everywhere I needed to go safe and sound which was nice as I'm a young female solo traveller! As for the bugs complaints, there were some very tiny ants in my room the first day but lavender raid is provided and that took care of them. This is Cambodia - tiny ants are a non issue especially when the hotel is so nice and welcoming. Oh! And they burn lemongrass all day and night and it smells DIVINE!

Stay here if you enjoy beautiful ambiance and desire a little slice of tranquility near the city.

Hi Kristen,
Thanks you so much for writing a positive review and for your understanding that YES this is Cambodia and there are bugs. We cant get rid of them all, its just not possible. The country has roaches, rats etc. We fumigate the premises yet sometimes a lone wolf comes along from the neighbourhood. We have to strike a balance you see, on one hand we can spray so much that it is not even good for the health of our guests OR we can say hey, as long as there are no bugs, a loner being an exception, lets not over do it. Its the environment and our health. We kind of lean towards the health and environment bit. Anyways, we are thankful that you wrote a review about us and we certainly would like to have you stay with us again.
All the best.
