The Velkommen Hostel is a nice place to hang out and meet other travelers. Coming from Europe you still expect windows or some sort of fresh air in rooms and also in budget accomodation. Unfortunately our room did not have that. Otherwise, everyone is really friendly and welcoming.

Stayed in a single room with fan, bed was comfortable and the shared bathroom was clean. As my room was at the back of the cafe/bar, the loud music was too much to bear - this is the only negative point of this place. The rest was ok - staff are friendly. Location was good - near to waterfront.

This is a proper backpackers, right in the heart of the backpacker area of Phnom Penh.
There are two buildings, the guesthouse on one side of the road, and the backpackers opposite.
We stayed in the 10 bed dorm on the top floor on the first night. This dorm has fans only, so gets very hot at night. There is also a huge gap at the top of the wall, which lets in all the light from the stairwell.
We moved to a 6 bed air con dorm after that - much more comfortable and easier to sleep.
The larger dorms have 2 toilets and showers inside, the smaller dorms just have the one. Showers are of the electric, self heating type, so there is always hot water.
All beds have their own security locker, which come with their own key. You can also padlock it with your own padlock, so it all feels quite secure. The doors to the dorms also lock.
Staff are all really friendly (a mixture of Khmer and Western), and most speak perfect English. Tours and busses are book able from reception, and the tour guides will come to pick you up from the hostel.
The bar serves reasonably priced food and drinks, but it is no cheaper than some of the restaurants by the water. The bar has no happy hour, so at times it's actually cheaper to go out.
Wifi is available in the bar area, and some of the lower level dorms. You can't pick up the signal on the top floors.

We stayed in one of the $10 twin rooms with a fan. The room was very basic, but it was clean and the fan worked fine, so nothing to complain about. There are share bathrooms, but they are seriously some of the cleanest I've been during my trip through SEasia. Staff are wonderful! So friendly and they give you so much good advice, just ask! The downstairs bar is always a good time in the evenings and during the day it's a nice place to chill and take a nap. The location is prime as well. So close to the riverfront, night market, royal palace... Definitely would recommend! My friend and I had so much fun we extended our stay here.

Room Tip: There aren't windows in many of the private rooms, but we didn't have a problem with that. T...

Spent 3 nights here while in Phnom Penh, thanks to a recommendation from someone I met on the bus. At $4.5 it is the cheapest hostel I've ever stayed in. But don't worry, its not cheap an cheerful. The rooms are clean, and the room I stayed in had lockers and 2 onsite bathrooms. There is a bar downstairs, and they have very cheap meals. It's also located in one the most diverse areas of the city, and is close to all the basic amenities. My last SE Asian hostel was definitely one of the best.

Room Tip: Go for the 10 bed doors. Comfortable, secure and well-equipped.

Cleanliness is definitely an issue. The bed sheet has suspicious marks. We booked the air con room, but it was stinky. The staff said it was because they had not fixed the toilet??? We had to change to this tiny fan room with a bunker bed, no windows, with the shared bathroom next door. The room is extremely steamy humid. I was very disappointed. Not sure about the dorm, but do not recommend the rooms downstairs.

I really enjoyed my stay in this hostel. I thought the staff was very friendly and helpful (and fun when they work the bar at night). The bar and chillout area is good for meeting other travelers. The location is prime -- right by the river near a lot of restaurants, bars, and attractions. The rooms are fairly basic, but its cleanliness makes up for lack of style.
