“Great place to stay!”
Reviewed April 3, 2013 via mobile

After arriving on a 6 hour bus from HCMC, I was recommended this hotel by a Tuk Tuk driver. It was exactly what I needed close to bars and restaurants. The staff were very friendly and made me feel at ease. The hotel manager booked me a bus ticket to Siem Reap he was very helpful and spoke good English..... I would stay here again!

Great location, good restaurants and bars close by and just a short walk to the waterside area.
Downside is a lack of lift. This was not a problem in terms of luggage as the staff were great and brought the luggage up and down the stairs. However, it did make us think twice before going back to our room to drop things off.

The central location of this guesthouse was very nice, but i'd be happy to look for a different location next time. We stayed at both ends of our trip as we were with a group. The night we arrived another member of our group also arrived but they had no room for her and so we said she could stay with us. The bathroom was not as clean as i'd like it - still soap stuff left in dish area from previous user and other unclean stuff on floor. On our second stay the room was cleaner and I had no problems with it. Apparently some rooms do not have windows but ours did, both times we stayed. The rooms have both air con and fans which was great to keep the mosquitoes down and as we adjusted to the heat on the first leg of our trip. The staff mostly had very good English, but a few did not, and always tried to be helpful. They serve food in the guesthouse by having it cooked elsewhere and bringing it in. There are also a good selection of restaurants very close by the guesthouse, and places to go for a drink later in the evening if you like. As a base to tour the city it is very nice as we were able to walk for hours from there around the city and back and see most things quite comfortably. From here you are so close to the Palace, and the evening waterfront activities. The central market, old market and night markets are also not too far away by foot. Though if you are not a walker, tuk tuk drivers are always right outside the door to offer you a tour or a ride. If I needed to I would be fine with staying there again, but next time I will look to see what else I can find first.

We stayed at the Nawin for a combined period of over a month in 2011. We live in Phnom Penh now and made a reservation for a room for a friend of ours over the phone about a week in advance. Three days before his arrival i stopped by the Nawin to confirm the reservation and check out the room as i knew there had been a remodel since our previous stay. They didn't refer to a reservation book but looked at some postits on the counter ledge for a while before they found his name. This seemed so strange to me as they never referred to a reservation book or computer. I also learned at this time that the previous owners had gone and it was under new management. The previous owners were very nice and very organized. So i confirmed the reservation despite my negative impression of their reservation records. Then on the night of our arrival, at 9PM, they did not have a room for him. They seemed utterly confused and the young man behind the counter looked aimlessly for another postit even though he told us the hotel was full. We were astonished by their disorganization. They seemed unable to produce a reservation book. When my wife asked to speak with the owner he offered no apology and could only blame us. Difference of night and day from the previous owners. I would recommend this hotel if you don't mind showing up to find that you don't have a room and are forced to search for another hotel after a long flight. Sad to see the previous owners are gone. They were wonderful hosts, and never lost my reservation. They actually used a book to record reservations.

As a member of a group with Intrepid Travel I didn't get to see the nightly rate for the Nawin but I'm pretty sure it was one of the cheapest we stayed in on our trip. The foyer was dark and off-putting and the opportunity to have breakfast there was pretty limited. Our room backed onto a bakery so there were noises during the night as next day's bread was being prepared but having said that we hadn't paid for luxury. The room was clean the water was hot, things worked and the staff were keen to please: what more do you want on a trip like this?
What we got was a great location: minutes from the river and the Royal Palace and an abundance of bars and restaurants where you could get dinner or breakfast within a couple of minutes' walk. We felt comfortable and secure there - and that's a big bonus for pensioner travellers.

Room Tip: There's no lift so ask for a low level room - there are some on the ground floor.
