“A fun hostel to stay in if you are in Phnom Penh”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

This hostel was a fun place to stay and the bar upstairs is a great place to meet people. The hostel also organises pub crawls etc. The rooms are pretty although we had an ensuite bathroom and it was tiny! But I guess you get what you pay for. I think this is a good place to go if you want to meet other foreigners and have a fun night out in Phnom Penh

I don't know nothing about rooms or bathrooms, because I could not even arrive there.

Made my reservation calling Mad Monkey Siem Reap, and the guy said that the reservation was been made... Ok, let's go to phnom penh.

Arriving there at 3AM the security guy (They don't have 24/7 reception) said that the hostel was full, and there was no reservation for us.

So, at 3AM we started to look for other hostel, that is not a nice experience. The security guy helped us a little bit to find a new hostel and that was nice.

Maybe it was a Mad Monkey Siem Reap mistake... but doesn't matter, it's mad monkey

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review I am sorry there seemed to be a mix up, I did want to clarify some points as you were not able to stay with us. You made a telephone call to our receptionist in Siem Reap, her name is Tohna she explained that without an internet booking you could arrive at the Mad Monkey and IF, say that again, IF there was availability you could get a room. It states clearly on our website that you must book online to confirm your reservation, we do not accept telephone bookings without a credit or debit card like everyone else. You then arrived at 3.00 am in the morning, without a prior email or call expecting to get a room, unfortunately this is a bit unrealistic, you had no confirmed reservation and you had no credit card to book online you also turned up at 3am expecting that we would have availability (We are a very busy and popular hostel) and we just didn't have availability, even then our staff organized another hotel for you. I think there may have obviously been a misunderstanding over the telephone for which I am sorry, however I also think that given the circumstances it is quite unreasonable for you to give such an awful review - I have chatted to the staff and we will all turn up at your house at 3am in the morning unannounced to see if you will let us crash on your sofa :-) You may also want to consider if in this day and age if it is worth you applying for a debit card - you seem to be a big boy now i am sure you could handle it. We hope you have a fantastic time on your trip and get to enjoy Asia ;-) We love you! See you sometime on Thursday around 3am at your house, we may be a bit drunk and we will bring the animals with us, please make sure your kitchen is open because after a skinful of beer we tend to get the nibbles xxx

I slept in a 20 bed dorm with 2 toilets/showers. The beds are big and the sheets clean. There was a bar next door and considering the dorm was next door I could only slightly hear it . Food was good and it's a good place to meet other backpackers. The staff unfortunately not enough for this busy place. All in all it's an ok place in Phnom Penh.

Dear Guest -

Thank you for your review - We do mention everywhere on our website that we have an active and fun bar scene, that tends to happen when you accommodate 100 plus backpackers per night. However i would like to thank you for your review - I have addressed your review with our staff, next time you visit please try and stay in the Villa as its much more relaxed. Wishing you an awesome trip! The Team at The Mad Monkey

Thought my hostel days were over -- but I didn't want to be couped up in a stuffy luxury hotel on my last stint in Cambodia and wanted to meet people up good times. Mad Monkey didn't disappoint. Bar was fun -- people were fun -- the food was actually really good -- and the private room we had was sufficient enough to sleep in especially for the price paid. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. Overall, we had a great time here and would do it again.

The windows were boarded up completely. The toilet smelled really bad. But if the room is only for sleeping, it is not bad. The hostel has a good bar to have a drink. The location is fine, but at night everything is pretty off.

Dear Guest, thanks for your review, the two budget twin rooms we have did have windows over to the bar, however guests complained about the noise so we decided to enclose these two rooms. They are both due for a refit in October 2013 however until then they are the cheapest twin options we have in the house, the mid range twins that you were offered do have windows and balcony's - but are of course a little more expensive, and i understand you were shown the rooms prior to checking in. However I am pleased you enjoyed the bar and your stay with us, we will get to these two rooms soon. I hope you enjoy your travels!

Stayed here for 2 nights in a private room, which had more bed space than 2 people needed! Super comfortable and clean. We were on the second floor but weren't affected by any noise coming from the Sunset Bar above or the restaurant below. The only downside is that the one florescent light in the room made it quite dim for reading.

Staff was helpful, especially Linna. Wifi was pretty strong throughout. The hostel doesn't include breakfast with the room, but at least it is located in the BKK area, which has a ton of cafes and restaurants worth exploring.

I stayed here for 2 nights and it was clean. I actually booked 2 nights in a 12 bed female dorm, but when I was checking in, they couldn't find my reservation, and when I pulled it up on my phone for them they were perplexed. Apparently, they over booked and didn't have a bed for me in the female dorm. I can stay in mixed dorms but I prefer females and therefore pay more to do so.

I reluctantly agreed to stay in a 6 bed mixed dorm for one night and they promised to move me in the female dorm the next, also on the bottom bunk (which I requested for both nights but didn't get the first night).

The next day I checked out early, put my things in storage and told them I would be back after I did the Killing Fields tour to check into the female dorms and they happily said "okay." But later that day, I tried to check in and someone other than the original girl told me that they didn't have a bed for me in the female dorm!!! I was pretty fed up by then, and I think it was obvious, so she looked harder and decide there was a bed for me but it was a top bunk... I'm really not sure how to feel now... So I said "what else do you have that's bottom bunk" she said there's a bottom in a mixed dorm.... then I gave her a sad/mad, frustrated face... and she looked harder and found me a bottom bunk in a 12 bed female dorm. WTF!?!? I had to be mad and demanding to get what I originally booked and double agreed on. I don't get it!?!? Why not just give me that bed the moment I'm trying to check in on day 2? I think at that point, I'm just glad I finally got what I booked and paid for.

After all that here are the Pros and Cons:

Pros:
* beds were big and comfy (2nd bed had better sheets than 1st bed, 100% cotton vs. synthetic)
* clean new bathrooms (with just enough space, not spacious but not cramped)
* 2nd night in the female dorm, spacious and lockers were huge under beds with room for all my things
* bar on rooftop was decent
* always had toilet paper and hand soap, it was good
* lamps and power points at each bed
* 24/7 hot showers
* wifi worked everywhere!!! in both beds! (both buildings)
* easy to meet people and socialize
* location is for the most part safe and in an high end neighborhood (which can also be a Con)
* most of the staffs are nice, I just think the whole room situation was messy for me
* prices of the rooms/beds were good for the neighborhood

Cons:
* my drama with my room situation (read above)
* 1st night in mixed dorm (on the side of the restaurant), there were only small lockers in the rooms for our valuables (the other dorm in the reception side had big under the bed lockers)
* restaurant had "asian" food but it was bad and overpriced. I order noodle soup for breakfast which is a typical asian meal in the morning, they gave me packaged ramen for $3.50 USD. That's more than I would pay in the states for that meal. I grew up in an asian household and spent summers with my family in SEA, and I know for a fact that no real SEA breakfast consist of ramen as the noodle soup. Very disappointed with the restaurant (maybe they do western food better, but I refuse to eat that while traveling Asia). I do not recommend eating here.
* prices for things like water and food should be better, it was a little more than double for a water bottle than what it costs at convenient stores

So I like how clean it is, and how safe it is. I would stay here again, but now I know and am prepared to walk further for local food and snacks.

Room Tip: try to get a room on the side of the reception building and not the restaurant building. The recept...

Dear guest - Thank you for your review. Rahman noodles are actually used in every single Khmer noodle dish i have ever had, and i have been here for three years - i really dont know why - i guess its the local style. I am pleased you enjoyed the other elements of the hostel, thanks for your review! We hope you come back and visit us soon!
