“Mad love for this place!”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

We stayed here for a total of two nights. The first night was spent in the dorm rooms which were more than what we expected as we only paid $7 per bed. The room and bathroom was immaculate and it made us want to stay longer as we had only planned to stay for one night. We moved to the private room upstairs the next day and it was even better! We'd especially like to thank Tina and her sister for being so sweet and charming and assisting us with our transport to Siem Reap. You girls rock! I can't think of a better place to stay if you are in Phnom Penh. The atmosphere, the owners and staff, and the food made our stay so fun and relaxing! This is THE place to stay, backpackers!

Room Tip: Get a room on the first floor if you can. Loads of stairs in this place.

We stayed at the Mad Monkey for three nights in an ensuite a/c double room (no. 6) for $18 per night.
First, we have no major complaints about this place: the room was clear and spacious, the A/C worked well, the staff was welcoming when we arrived and helpful with arranging visa for Vietnam ($40 for 30 days). And our room was quiet.
The area is indeed a rather upmarket neighborhood with walled villas, development agencies and private schools. However we walked both to the Genocide Museum and the Royal Palace from the hostel. And if you look hard enough, you will find some street food among the many posh coffee shops.
BUT we felt that the value was not great for the price, especially for budget travelers, who will find the food and drinks at the hostel rather expensive. I am sure for mid-range travelers, especially single ones, this is a good place.
In all the places we stayed in Cambodia for the same or even less money, breakfast was included, but not at the Mad Monkey. Yes the room was spacious, but it was carelessly furnished and decorated. The bed lamp was fake, the room had only a single shelf, while there was enough room for a table, chair etc. The sink in the bathroom was so low that we could have kneeled before it to use it comfortably. The room was very dark because it faced the house next door. Altogether, it was rather spartan and scraggy while the common areas and the hallways were quite nicely done.
The room was not cleaned during our stay, despite the info package saying there was daily cleaning. And the wifi did not work in our room, but just in the bar on the roof and the restaurant downstairs.
Finally, the staff was giving incorrect information about tuk tuk prices to the Killing Fields and were really pushy to join the $25 p.P. tour, which is organised by a sister organisation of the hostel. We shared a tuk tuk with another couple for $10 return and were told that the price was $15, while the other couple was told it was $12 one way. I do not want to judge the tour they offer, but I really didn't like the pushy attitude.

Dear Andrea, Thank you for your time to drop us a review. I wanted to respond personally as I do to all customers that are less than happy! In instances where we have slipped up you will see that we have addressed and resolved these issues.

Regarding the food and drink prices, as we state in our brochures, we run a western standard kitchen, we only use non GM, organic food, meat and fish products, we also pay our staff fair wages above average as many of our staff come from disadvantaged families.

Anyone can find a restaurant in Phnom Penh where food is very cheap - and normally very bad, sometimes unsafe and with lowly paid workers serving the food. Saying that food items on our menu start at $2.00 which is hardly robbery considering the above, its safe, its delicious and our workers get paid fair wages.

Drinks prices - You obviously didn't go out drinking in Phnom Penh otherwise you would know our prices are lower than almost every bar in town. Of course you can get sit on the road, with a beer can that rats may have peed over and put the world to rights with a bitter toothed Cambodian granny - but that is not "like for like"

Really the issue is the equivalent of me saying that these trousers are excellent but I can get cheaper underpants - They both keep your crackers warm but they are not the same thing.

The rooms - We have been planning to add to the rooms for a while, we are only a year old and its just the matter of money :-) You see we do empathize with you. Saying that they are already a much higher standard than almost all of our competition in the same price range. (Look at the other reviews)

The room cleaning I checked the records - it says your room was cleaned at 1.23 pm by nee. If you have any further info about this please email me so I can follow up.

This is a funky place to stay! The food is very nice - wide range of western and Asian food all cooked great...you do pay a bit more tho but it much. Drinks are also a bit more pricey here ($3.25 for a glass of wine/$3.50 for a cocktail), but the staff are very upbeat and friendly! It's a good place to have start off drinks! Rooms are basic but clean, some small improvement in my room would have been a mirror and possibly a lamp but that's being fussy! I'd recommend the pub crawl sep on the fri night! Great way to meet people and even the owners of mad monkey come along!

We stayed a couple of nights in this hostel and really liked it. It is clean and well decorated with very creative murals on the walls. I actually went around on our last day and took pictures of all the murals. The staff helped us book our city tour and bus tickets to Kampot without a problem, which was a real plus. The owners, young guys from the UK, are very friendly and helpful adding to the easy going atmosphere of the place. The restaurant serves delicious food, but it is on the expensive side. The location is great, only five minutes' tuktuk ride from the Central Market and the center of town. The only thing I recommend is that if someone asks for a quiet place, not to put people next to the restaurant. Our room's "windows" faced the restaurant, and on nights when we were exhausted, it was difficult to fall asleep with the noise.

Overall, I felt comfortable and welcomed in this place. I would definitely recommend the Mad Monkey to my friends!

I stayed at the mad monkey for the past two days. I thoroughly enjoyed the exceptional attitude and helpfulness of the local staff!

We stayed in a private room for $18 a night. Good clean room with ensuite and hot water. In all I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get and the location but the staff make up for the flaws.

Overall I would recommend this to the flash packers out there.

Loved Mad Monkey hostel. We returned 3 times as we used it as a base. Clean, airy (air-con and fan) rooms. Brilliant staff- you can not fault their enthusiasm and general helpfulness. The food was gorgeous though on our budget slightly more pricey but the staff help you go elsewhere if requested. We stayed in the double for 2 nights and 2 different dorms the other 2 visits. They've a bar on the roof-top. It was out of use for our stay as twas being sound proofed but they've a nice area downstairs for a few drinks if needed. FREE Cool water re-fill.It's far enough from the main tourist areas but doesn't cost more than 2 or 3 dollars in/out. Their tuk-tuk drivers are all reasonably price out-front. Have to stay that it was the easiest visa I've ever had to get. Hand it into reception and a few days later..... nice Laos visa! :) We booked all our travel arrangements through the reception deck too. My sister never booked in advance and they halped her go elsewhere. She soon returned the next night. Twas lovely returning as the staff recognised us on return. Best of luck with the big wedding over the next few days :)

Room Tip: They've a 6 bed dorm (habitat) as well as an 8 bed dorm (Monkey Dorm) on the 1st floor. We also...

We only stayed one night but straight away you could tell they have a great group (front of house and kitchen). Both our meals were nice cocktails were great, prices for food and the rooms are more than fair though the rooms are basic, we will definitely look to stay again when we're back in PP in a couple of wks
