“Good Monkey Business!”
Reviewed January 7, 2012

Stayed in dorm rooms here with friends. Staff were extremely friendly upon arrival and made my group feel at home instantly. They arranged our whole Cambodia trip for us with no hassle! Food was DELICIOUS, pricier than other hostels but worth every bite! Great atmosphere in hostel-laid back and no stress. Enjoyed the roof top bar and mingling with other travellers. Rooms need air conditioning though, as was very humid when we were there.

Room Tip: The room beside the bar can get a little nosey at night, try to avoid!

We stayed for 2 nights at this hostel that was out of the way in Phnom Penh. The 1st night we had a room that was overlooking the bar and restaurant (room 2) which was clean and basic but the hostel rooms need a huge overhaul. We requested an alternative as it was really noisy but the staff mentioned this closed at 10pm which was still going at 1am that morning and was referred to in the hostel brochure that the bar/restaurant will remain open until the last person leaves. In addition, there was a terrible sewerage smell and additional noise coming through from the kitchen in this room.
Day 2 we requested another room which they were able to give to us(room 8) but this was no better as there was little water to shower and this did run out. The wi-fi did not work on the upper floors and the aircon didn't work.
The website is misleading as it mentioned payment is accepted by credit card, transfers could be arranged from bus and airport (which is no longer provided) and the rooftop bar is no longer in operation due to noise complaints from neighbours.

After having said all that the bar and restaurant is awesome serving amazing food and drinks so well worth a visit if staying elsewhere. We did mention all the above issues to the staff and the management were very accommodating, helpful and apologetic having offered us a free breakfast on the 1st day and t-shirts/lunch packs/breakfast on the 2nd day.

I would still not recommend staying here as the staff were also not really able to provide reliable information on the tours and when we finally booked our tour (after 3 attempts), the trip was actually 12 hours instead of the 6 hours that they told us.

Room Tip: Do not stay here but do go to the bar and restuarant

Hi this is Steve one of the owners - thanks for your review. I must admit I am surprised you gave us such a low overall rating when your ratings for other aspects of our service were so high. We have taken into account your comments and applied the following remedial action. We now have three routers for internet so it reaches all floors - Rooms 1 and 2 next to the communal area have been soundproofed to reduce noise - We have implemented a second water tank to ensure that there is a stronger water flow. Thanks for the positive part of your review - we do hope you come back and visit us again.

Booked this place based on the reviews on Trip Advisor. On arrival we were happy with what we saw and the friendliness of the staff. However, that goes away pretty quickly.

The location is not good. It is if all you want to do is stay in an area with lots of embassies and expats around. Nothing feels local about it though, much better locations and similar price points around the palace and river bank where at least you're in walking distance to some sights.

Restaurant is expensive as are most places for food in the area. You'll end up paying more for dinner than your room for the day.

We tried to extend our stay one day and had that confirmed with the staff. They did inform us that we would have to change rooms, which was completely ok with us. However on the day, we were told they had no rooms and were booked. There was nothing more than a 'sorry, there's nothing we can do'. Very disappointed with that and having to scramble to find a place the same day.

About the rooms, they are very very basic. Which is not a problem. However, they are dark, dingy and there is definitely an odor in the rooms. We had room 4 which had NO windows...unless you count the opening that faces the inner hallway which you can't leave uncovered unless you want everyone looking in on you. It provides no natural light anyways, so you're always in a gloomy room.

Overall, there are much better options at the same price point. If you're coming all the way to Cambodia, do yourself a favor and stay somewhere where there are local restaurants, sights and markets nearby.

Dear Guest - Thank you for your review. Although your review was negative, you requested to stay for another day. Although we did actually have room available that day - our team decided it would be better in your case if you found another guest house. Without going into the details having a great stay goes both ways - and that means good guests as well as good service.

With regards the prices in the restaurant you will see we have many reviews stating great food and great price - of course as an international standards restaurant you are always going to be able to find food cheaper on the street.

BKK1 area does not have any embassies - S21 museum 5 minutes, Riverside 15 minutes, Street 278 5 minutes it is also in the safe area of Phnom Penh.

Although we cant say we are in a great rush to have you visit again we do hope you enjoy your trip all the same.

We booked our stay there with hostelbookers but as we arrived there, the receptionist told us,that they got no reservation. She said that they have no room left but that she will check again. Afterwards she found one for us. The room (Room No 1) looked first not so bad but the bathroom was terribly smelly and the window was directly into the restaurant/bar/reception-area. As we mentioned that, she said that the restaurant will close at 10 pm. Unfortunately there were guests and music until late after midnight - not very honest... And the first phone call for the reception was on 6am so we didn't have a very long night. On the next day we could change the room (to Room No 14). There was a comfy bed and a small cupboard (and a second matress along the wall, which seemed to be stored there), but nothing else. As we came back in the evening the bathroom was again very smelly (also the shared bathroom we came through). The water pump for the water supply was directly in the room next to us which was incredibly loud. At least the water pump stops working (with a time switch I think) from 11pm until 6am. So if you are lucky you get 7h sleep. There are maybe nice rooms but we haven't seen them.

We also bought our bus tickets there. They told us, that the bus depature is at 7.30am as we came to the bus station we were lucky that the bus was late because departure time was at 7am!!!

To sum up: we had bad luck with nearly everything with this guesthouse. But at least the atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice.

Room Tip: Don't take room No. 1, 2 and 14

Hello this is Steve one of the managers of the Mad Monkey. Just to let you know that we have listened to your feedback as we do with all reviews. We apologize about not expecting you - in your case you booked online just prior to arrival at the hostel and we hadn't yet received the email - there is not much we can do to avoid this if you book just before you arrive however we did have availability and you were accommodated.

We have today addressed all of the other issues. Firstly rooms 1 and 2 have been soundproofed - Secondly we have replaced the toilet in room 14. The offending mattress has been removed, the pump issue which only affects room 14 will be solved this week with the implementation of a second water pump on the ground level. Its a shame that these things went wrong for you - we remember you in the restaurant and you were always happy and nice people - and apart from these things we understand you had a good time. Thanks for highlighting the issues for us - please be assured that the relevant remedial action has been implemented.

We stayed for 3 nights at this place. The staff are very friendly (at times over-friendly!) and helpful.
We payed US$7 for a double private room, so it is very cheap but the room was very comfortable. The bathrooms are shared and the shower is just a shower head on the toilet wall, so if your'e picky about your bathrooms then this isn't the place for you!
It had a very good common room/restaurant area down stairs to meet other travellers with very cheap drinks as well! Upstairs there is an old bar, another relaxing place to chill out and meet others.
They have organised tuk-tuk drivers outside the hostel, and you can organise to get into town for us$1 each (make sure you don't get ripped off!) or $6 to the airport (takes about 45 minutes).

the hostel is fairly well managed and in a residential area just a few streets away from the main action of BKK1. the rooms were extremely value for money. the staff were friendly and tried their best to help us with whatever we needed. our room was on the highest floor so walking up was a bit of a chore but the room was clean and air con-ed =) the bar on the third level is a great place to hang out and has a tv with an extensive list of channels.

our only gripe was with the high price that they charge for tuktuks and food. for a trip to the killing fields, s21 and then the russian market, the price quoted was either 20 or 25usd. we got a tuktuk on one of the street corners for 14usd and he drove us around the whole day. that said, i guess you are guaranteed some quality if you go with the mad monkey's tuktuks.

food in the restaurant is expensive, just like most of the other restaurants in the BKK1 area but again you're paying for comfort and quality. we got our best meals (in terms of price and quality) from the russian market, so head there if you're looking to eat khmer food. just remember to bargain!

Thank you my lovely for your lovely review - You are right our food is not the cheapest that you will find but at the same time it wont make you ill and its prepared to western standard, for people from England, Europe and Australia etc its still cheap. The Tuk Tuks are 100% independent - we dont own them or run them - always best to barter for your Tuk Tuk like everywhere in Asia. All that being said we loved having you here and loved your company - please come back soon and enjoy your travels!

I can not thank the team at Mad Monkey enough. Always helpful, always friendly.
They were great when I lost all my credit cards and, (after I had fixed that problem) when I was leaving they even took me to a local market and helped me negotiate for the extra luggage I needed for all the extra stuff I had accumulated during my stay (I was there for four weeks). No complaints about anything during that time.

The food was great quality with good variety in the menu. Lots of people around and a great buzz.

Perhaps I should have looked around for something cheaper (never did get around to doing a price comparison) but I was too comfortable and liked the staff and owners who made me feel at home.
