“Wish we stayed longer”
Reviewed August 31, 2011

Phnom Penh was just a part of a 10 day, 5-city SE Asian tour, so we could only spend one night here. We arrived by 3PM, Gavin offered one of the suites with a balcony view, but we opted to still get 2 rooms so we could have 2 bathrooms for our group of 5. Since, we had limited time in Phnom Penh, we didn't want to spend most of it, waiting on each other. :)

Gavin upgraded one of our rooms to a triple, and it was huge! There were 3 double beds but we still had enough room to move around. The a/c was a little weak but there was a fan to compensate for this. Beds were firm and comfortable, rooms were clean and they had their own restaurant/bar (Lazy Lizard) which offered great food, and a very relaxed atmosphere. We had a good time just lounging about and enjoying the $1 draft Angkor beer.

We also arranged our bus tickets to Siem Reap through the hotel, I only wish there were options as to what bus company would be used. We paid $10, but would gladly pay more for more comfortable travel/bus arrangements. The bus we used was unbearably hot, and stopped often. It made the 7 hour trip to Siem Reap more uncomfortable than it needed to be.

Tip: It's cheaper to arrange tours to Russian Market, Tuol-Seng and Killing Fields through he guesthouse ($15). But feel free to make arrangements with other tuk-tuk drivers if you want to explore other areas.

Aside from the clean and spacious rooms, good food, relaxed atmosphere and great location, Gavin and the staff of Velkommen guesthouse provided great service and made me want to stay longer. Would recommend this to anyone visiting Phnom Penh and will hopefully be able to stay here again.

Room Tip: If you don't want to climb several flights of stairs, our triple room is just a few steps from t...

This was the first stop on our long trip in Southeast Asia and this was definitely one of the best guesthouses we stayed in. We booked a double room - we were given a clean spacious triple with large bathroom, great shower, safety deposit box and large double bed per person. The staff were very friendly and the location is fantastic, just on the waterfront. Breaskfast not included but there are plenty of cheap places around. I would definitely recommend this place to everybody!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Velkommen G/H, within walking distance of the Museum, Royal Palace and Silver Wat. only 1 minute to the river and lots of good restaurants. Our room was huge, with all the facilities you need plus very clean. We had a little balcony with views of the river all for $30 a night. The street is quiet so we had no problem sleeping, there are tuktuks at the door to take you anywhere for a couple of dollars. The only downside was the 64 steps to the room. but the trade off was- very quiet for the middle of PP.
We would definetely stay here again.

We stayed at Velkommen Guesthouse 2 nights. When we arrived, they seemed to have written our reservation for a day later but they happily upgrated us to a suite for the first night. The location is really great: on the riverside, close to plenty of really nice restaurants, cafés and bars. Travelling in tuktuk is really cheap in Phnom Penh so it only cost 2 dollars to go to the Russian market or to the Tuol Sleng Museum.

There are 2 Velkommen's:
-The Velkommen Inn has been established for over 3 and a half years, is located on st 104 & offers double rooms.

- The Velkommen Guesthouse is brand new, located on st 144 and offers: Double, twins, & triple rooms, as well as a 2 bedroom suite.

The guest actually stayed at the velkommen Inn on st 104.
Thanks for visiting us.

Having stayed in three different rooms here, a few points of clarification re: the previous commenter are in order. One, the guesthouse has no control over the rolling blackouts that are still a daily feature of life in PP. Two, for $14, one is generally lucky to have a window and A/C; if you want a view, upgrade to one of the $30 rooms. Three, it's Southeast Asia, you are never far from street noise; get used to it.

The front rooms, particularly those on the 5th and 6th floors, are fantastic, though the wireless can be a bit spotty. $14 rooms get little natural light but have all the basics. Staff and owner are helpful and will engage with you or leave you alone as is your wont. Food is perfectly decent and there are some edible Khmer options on the same road, which is located near to the Quay but on a street mercifully devoid of hostess bars.

Room Tip: Front rooms have balconies (6th floor is particularly massive). 5th floor is a two-room suite.

The rooms are small and feel like a prison cell.

The bed was hard and lumpy. The noise from the street echoed up into the room. The view from my window was a wall which I would I have been able to touch had it not been for the bars across the widow.

The AC unit is placed directly over your head... Not nice.

The electricity in our room repeatedly turned off and on - being off for 15 minutes at a time. When I told the staff, they could do noting. They wanted to check; by this, see if the lights, television and shower really were 'off'.

Having said this, it was $14.

All our Mattresses are brand new high quality spring Mattresses the same brand used in other large hotels. Unlike the soft foam mattresses found in many other guesthouses.
We have a wide range of rooms, this guest stayed in a $14 room measuring 13m2. Compared to other guesthouses in our location this offers exceptional value.
We have other much larger rooms measuring 35m2 for just $30. These rooms come with a balcony and fantastic river views.
all our rooms come with both Ac and a fan. The Airflow of the Ac can be directed above the bed.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused due to the loss of electricity. Our reception staff are not trained electricians. Once the problem was reported, all measures were taken to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
One point i will not apologize for is the security bars across the windows, the security of our guests and their property is is of the highest priority.
