Owner description: The Flicks Community Movie Theaters are the most unique locations in Phnom Penh where you can enjoy the blockbusters, documentaries and the classics on a big wide screen, in "uber-comfy" air conditioned movie rooms, from before there were big cineplexes. The Big Flicks 1 on Street 95 is the legendary little movie theater from the time there was no other big screen in town, located in an original wooden Cambodian house and features an all air conditioned bar and a leafy outside terrace. Its movie room seats 32 people. The Flicks 2 is its little brother in the city center and also screens the must-see movie for all visitors, The Killing Fields, daily in its 16 seats movie room, located on the 2nd floor of a backpackers hotel. Enjoy your movies for only $3.50 per day, with a drink, snacks and homemade fresh popcorn available at the bars! Welcome home!

We were the only ones in the movie house, lay back on a comfy mattress, hugest bowl of popcorn. What a great way to watch a movie. Really recommend it. You can order drinks too.

We found them on the internet, they have three locations in town and show The Killing Fields (the movie from 1984) twice a week. It's a art house/ backpackers kinda theatre so we were all laying down on blankets and pillows but it's a great movie and what better place to see it than in Phnom Penh and first or after actually visit the fields for real. Ticketprice is USD 3.50 for the 'luxury' seats.

After eating something funny called happy pizza I was taken to the middle of Phnom Penh's red light district. Rather than receiving a happy ending as I was naturally expecting, I was in fact taken past all the girly bars to here, the Flicks Cinema to watch the suitably quintessential Cambodian movie the one & only 1984 film, The Killing Fields.

This small single screen cinema is owned & operated by a European expat is basically a private-style cinema running films off a computer that are shown via an off-the-shelf projector inside a large room insulated with noise ruduction foam stuck onto the walls. The room is predominantly coloured in black to obsorb light & lower light reflection which is a smart cheap trick to enhance colours. Standard home 5.1 surround sound speakers do a decent job only lacking that thundering low-level bass response from a powered bass-driver but this is just nit picking really. The overall effect was a surprisingly good viewing experience.

There are five rows of seating for about 20 people max. Try to get in early & avoid the back two rows as they are not positioned on a descending step & are blocked by people sitting on the third row which probably has the best & unobstructed view out of the seated rows. In front of the third row are two further rows on the floor with pillows & cushions for people who have eaten too much happy pizza to stretch out on.

The chance to watch the most famous movie about Cambodia which won 8 BAFTA's & 3 Academy Awards in 1984 including for best supporting actor for the late Cambodian Haing S Ngor was real memorable. I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years. I admit I was off my face trying to comprehend seeing Dith Pran crawling thru a field of decomposing bodies, mud & sorrow, it was a complete smackdown to reality. I thought to myself that I had watched this when I was 10 years old but rather than scare me it taught me early in life about the human spirit both good & evil.
