“Hopeless administration, pleasant rooms”
Reviewed February 27, 2012

Rooms are nice, though the screened toilet will not be to evryone"s liking. Pleasant litttle pool. Problem was the booking. An in person booking was made for a select room one moth before the arrival date. That was difficult enough. On arrival the requested room was not provided. Then for the subsequent dates which had been booked, one month earlier when they had vacacies, we were told they were full and we had to go Villa Samnang. We returned to Phnom Penh from travelling and went to Villa Samang.....which was pretty nice. Then there were phone calls from Villa Srey asking why we hadn"t checked in. This happened On two occasions. Not the end of the world but i hate to think what the booking process is like when you rely on email communication.

I was taken here after being told that the only free room at Villa Samnang is a windowless room but I think I would still prefer that windowless room. First I spilled my drink over the bed and it took some time before the cambodian receptionist finally understood that I need a maid to clean up. The second thing that bothered me was wood flooring which had a 5mm space between the boards and was filled with dirt and thus there were plenty of ants. And while travellers appreciate simplistic or practical design but there's nothing practical when the toilet door is just two bamboo curtains hanging freely which were already smelly. Such designs never work for toilets and neither is it okay to put a sink next to the bed. It's only okay if it's an "open bathroom design" like at The Plantation, and not a sink next to bed, but even The Plantation had proper doors on the toilet.

Otherwise the place looks nice and it has a quite old look, maybe the doors are from the '80s but nothing fancy. I think the manager is that french guy or maybe he's just a receptionist. I read the place has staff trained by a french NGO, so it's not one of those bad places that good travellers want to avoid. The staff was friendly and the maid professionally cleaned up the room and made up the bed without wrinkles.

I just wish that someone would feed that cat that hangs around inside the villa and comes meowing in the evening to your door if the light is on.

We had one family room (one queen and one single) -The rooms are nicely decorated and has a real wood floor. The only issue was the nails were starting to stick up through the boards and you had to watch where you stepped. The beds are about a 8 out of 10. Most beds in Cambodia are typically hard and these were better than most!

The staff were very helpful and the free breakfast was amazing (eggs (fried/scrambled/omlet, bacon, juice/coffee and plenty of bread). We were able to park our vehicle on the street with no problems. There are always tuk tuks waiting to take you places. We did not have time to use the pool (no shallow end) but it looked great even though it was a bit small. A great place to relax after a long day in the city!

Villa Srey is ver quiet because there are only 6 rooms! And there are no steps to climb.

Overall - a great place to stay with a personal and quiet feel!

When passing by street 306, I discovered a charming hotel where I was welcomed by a very willing, always smiling staff. I spent a night there in room number 5(photo link ), an very comfortable room with an small personal terrasse where I had my break first. The villa srey is located in a peaceful street nearby the independence monument, also nearby sympathic bars and restaurants. A big thanks to all the team of villa srey, i will try to come back soon

It seems in these days everything is called a "boutique hotel" as soon as rooms are painted in funky colours and have some unusual furniture. Villa Srey has hopped on this trend but it is far from meeting the concept of a boutique hotel. The rooms are minimalistically furnished; indeed, the few furniture look like cheap IKEA copies. The room I stayed in did not even have a cabinet and the desk is a plank of wood nailed to the wall. The toilet has no door (only a blind) and the shower leaks into the room. The breakfast is nothing to write home about - only baguette with butter and jam. For 50 USD a night, this is certainly overprized for Phnom Penh.

We stayed 2 nights and though it was quiet and the staff friendly, it was not quite what we had expected for 50$ a night. The room was very stuffy as there was no ventilation at all. As we were there during the rainy season, it smelt of humidity. Most of the amenities advertised are not actually in the room (eg. Dvd player, hairdryer, tea & coffe making facilities) and the 'large desk' was a 40cm wide plank of wood nailed to the wall way higher than the chair, making it impossible to write on it unless standing. The lovely croissants shown on the breakfast table on the leaflet are also false advertising: all you get is bread and jam. The pool is minuscule.
The place is fine, it's just dissapointing considering the price and the pictures.
