“Little oasis in the heart of Phnom Penh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2011

My wife and I were looking for a hotel with a swimming pool close to all the great restaurants and shops in Phnom Penh and near the city centre where I was working for six weeks.
Circa 51 meet our expectations and more. It is an Art Deco style house converted into a "boutique hotel" with eight rooms that has a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Not too big and not too small, just right and the swimming pool was fantastic after a days work or a sight seeing expedition.
The location is walking distance from restaurants and shops in 240 and 278 streets and a short tuk tuk ride to Central Market or Tonle Sap River side for more shops, restaurants, pubs and more.
Yvette, Majid and their staff were very friendly and would kindly provide assistance with daily activities such as choosing restaurants for dinner, arranging tickets and transport for sight seeing trips, best places to shop and last but not least "Max" the best looking Labrador dog in Phnom Penh who was the resident mascot that would greet you with a waggy tail and is always ready for a pat.
The accommodation was great value for money, we were upstairs in room number six, very quite, two outside windows, wireless internet and to have a swimming pool is a must in Phnom Penh.
Our experience at Circa 51 was wonderful, we will be back in Phnom Penh in June and have arranged to stay at Circa 51 again. Thanks to all the staff at Circa 51 for making our trip a great one and we look forward to seeing you all in June.

Room Tip: The swimming pool was pure indulgence.

Overall a very nice experience, staff are friendly and eager to help with questions, the pool is nice, inviting and clean and the fact it is small makes it feel like home.
The room was large though the bathroom small (no fan or window to open). Some items in the room required maintenance (windows not shut properly, let noise in, shaky bathroom tap).
Also, location is not the best, nothing with EASY walking distance around (considering the heat).

This is one the best hotels I have stayed in in PP (and I have stayed in many). I stayed in Circa 51 for almost 3 weeks, while on business, and I enjoyed the high standards of the personal service, the customized attention, and the attractive decor and cleanliness of the rooms. As a business traveler I appreciated the good quality wireless internet and the nice and spacious rooms (rooms 5 and 7 are both excellent). Best of all, because Circa51 is so small (8 rooms), Yvette and Majid and the local staff make an effort to ensure that you are comfortable and satisfied, and they are highly flexible in catering to your needs. Thank you to everyone in Circa 51!

Room Tip: Get Room 7 (upstairs): it's huge!

Circa51 has a unique at-home character and great ambience in leafy surrounds. Yvette and Majid are sincerely keen to ensure everything goes well for visitors - right from the welcoming drink on arrival. The staff are very friendly and efficient and became our good friends during our stay. The crystal clear and clean pool is great for a real swim and fantastic to cool down and unwind after a day's work. We stayed for 6 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Poolside breakfast provided; then lunch and dinner readily available from plenty of good restaurants within walking distance as well as a nice Indian/Pakistani menu available from Saffron delivered to the hotel.

Was only in Phnom Penh for a couple of days visiting family & needed somewhere central to stay. Major selling point of the hotel is the pool, very relaxing to jump into after a busy day exploring the city. Rooms are spacious & clean, only critism is the lack of windows making the room very dark. Staff very helpful, required an early breakfast due to flight & this was easily accomodated by ordering the night before

I stayed here for a week on business just after it had opened, and found it very pleasant indeed. The owner was helpful and courteous, and the surroundings very relaxing. The pool is probably the best out of all the 'boutique' hotels in Phnom Penh (and I've tried them all). My only minor is that our room didn't get cleaned as often as we'd have liked, so we had to ask at reception (but after we asked, it was cleaned very quickly). Would definitely go back!

This hotel was our second hotel in PP. Our Ultimate destination is Shinoukville, but coming from a cold climate, we had no warm weather clothes, so we had to stay an extra night in PP.
We found this hotel on recommendation from the proprietor of the hotel next door, who we stayed our first night in PP with. It is interesting to look at these hotels as direct comparisons to each other. Both have their plus's and very minor minus's. So here we go , Circa 51.
The first impression I got of this hotel is that it is an island from the rest of PP, although it is a 5 min Tuk Tuk ride away from the heart of the city, it is a world away from the streets of PP. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by friendly English speaking staff who offered you the most delicious welcome drink as they check you in. Standing at reception you are greeted by a large outdoor pool with a beautiful old tree leaning over the edge of the pool, creating the impression of a shaded oasis.
After a nice chat at check in (and 5 minutes of patting the big unobtrusive Labrador Max) we were shown to our ground floor suite in very close proximity to the pool. The room itself is basic but comfortable there is no unnecessary clutter, the furnishings are basic but adept to the space. There is a bar fridge (YAY) queen size bed, two day bed style lounges, coffee table, wardrobe and writing desk. All the things which you would need to be comfortable. The bathroom is clean and well stocked and hot water is instant with the turn of a handle. There is also bottled water, which other hotels do not offer.
We spent alot of time around the pool relaxing drinking cocktails and $2 beer from the poolside bar. This is where we had most of our interactions with staff, who were always attentive and friendly. This too was the case with the reception staff, nothing was too hard for them to organise, Buses to Shinoukville, Tuk Tuk's out to the killing fields, recommendations for dinner, Everything was done with a smile.
As we checked in at around lunch time we were a bit hungry, we had a look at the lunch menu which was all basically Pakistani styled food such as samosas and the like. My only criticism of Circa 51 would be to extend the snack menu to include something more familiar to European guests i/s simple pizza, breads fruit platter etc. Reading the responses to other reviews, I am sure this is on the owners list of future improvements. It is worth also noting that the waitstaff brought us freshly cut mango's while we were sitting around the pool, just because we looked like we needed it! How good is that for service? Brilliant!
Breakfast the next day was small but fine, we had a very nice omelet, toast and coffee, the waitress even asked us if we would like seconds (the toast and jam was too good to pass up)

All in all we had a great stay here and if we have a stop over in PP on our way back to Korea we will definitely drop in for a night.

Keep up the good work Circa 51!!!!!!!!
