“lovely garden setting close to the royal palace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2012

we went there for a light lunch after having visited the royal palace, as it is in a little side street very close by. at first we were the only guests and chose to sit in the lovely garden outside. service was very friendly and quick, considering the waiter had to go over to the other building for everything.

they have a good, if limited menu on offer, so it is ideal for drinks, a snack or lunch, but not sure about having dinner there.

“Check your bill, or better yet, give it a miss.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2011

I had the same experience that PDV999 mentioned. Yes, it's a lovely location, and the menu, although very limited, is appealing.

The night I went to Boddhi Tree Aram for dinner, I was the only patron. Although there were 3-4 staff milling about, only one young man seemed to be on the job. He was acting as both waiter and receptionist, and while I was eating, 3 parties of guests arrived, so he disappeared for 45 minutes to check them in.

When he at long last brought the bill, there was an extra item on it. He removed that, but 3 of the remaining 4 items were 25-30% higher than what is printed on the menu. I might be more tolerant of this, but the menu is a weekly menu. It should not be difficult to program your cash register to match a menu that changes every week. Admittedly the prices are low, but this is simply is dishonest practice, and it seems to be a common one at this restaurant. As the other reviewer said, there are simply too many good, honest restaurants in Phnom Penh to be bothered with this.

“Beautiful place, potential for good food but sloppy service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2011

This was the second time we went to Boddhi Tree Aram (street 244, off 240), this time for lunch. Last time we went some construction in the kitchen was going on so the menu was limited. The restaurant itself is very charming in an old Khmer house with nice ceramic tiles on the floor. We went upstairs and had lunch on the balcony. The food on the menu is a nice mix of Khmer, sandwiches, mediterranean food and tapas and has some very tempting items. Also good fresh juices, smoothies and shakes. Unfortunately, our experience was not very positive because of the poor quality of service. We went with four and ordered four different items: sushi platter, pita bread bbq lamb with hummus, flat bread with chicken, pita with brie/grilled veggies. Sushi platter was not available and we changed doe another flat bread with chicken. A long time later, the first items were delivered - one by one with the last one ten minutes after the first one. Also getting the drinks we ordered took a loooong time. When the food was delivered one the flat breads was with lamb, not chicken and we got a pita chicken/mushrooms instead of the pita bbq lamb hummus. So the first lesson learned here (although the waitress spoke very good english): let them repeat your order. The food itself is of good quality, well prepared and presented. The main problem with Boddhi Tree Aram is the quality of service. It takes a long time to get your orders (even drinks) and they mess up the order. When it was time to pay the bill, it turned out that the cashier uses different prices than what you find on the menu (you guessed it: they're higher, especially for the drinks) - so either their cash register has to be re-programmes or they have to reflect the higher prices in the menu. The second issue with the bill was that suddenly there is a 5% sur-charge which is not mentioned in the menu and not specified on the bill itself - this turned out to be for service charges ....... After re-issuing the bill, we paid and left, quite dissappointed as this place has a lot of potential but does not live up to it due to the poor service.
So three lessons:
1 - let them repeat the order
2 - be aware that it takes a long time before you get your food - so don't be in a hurry
3 - check your bill
If this place improves their service, it could become a local favourite, but I'm not sure if we will be back as there are so many nice places in Phnom Penh.....
