Description: Malis is a landmark restaurant that has long enjoyed a reputation for pushing the boundaries of fusion food with traditional, original and new age Cambodian cuisine. With capacious seating and four VIP rooms set in a courtyard around a fountain, it is undeniably the capital's premier gourmet dining experience. Its busy kitchen is home to Luu Meng, Cambodia's only masterchef, whose artfully prepared dishes have graced tables around the world.

We lunched with a large group and found the food to be interesting, tasty and beautifully presented. The service was excellent. There are some private rooms if you want your own personal dining experience and at night pretty illuminated garden settings.

There are many khmer restaurants you can go in Phnon Penh... but if you want a more comfortable, refined experience... this would be it. Much better than khmer surin for not much more expensive.

Lovely setting. Service a bit patchy though... some of the staff seem a little insincere but overall it was ok.

Walking through the entrance of Malis for a large family group dinner, I just didn't know where to look. It is so beautiful at night. Dining is set amongst the cleverly illuminated garden and clear fish ponds. We ate in a private room, but I want to go back for a romantic dinner in the garden. The food is interesting, authentic and delicious. The service was impeccable and made for a memorable occasion.

We arrived at the restaurant without a reservation and had the choice of either being seated closest to the entrance or coming back another day. As the service staff had agreed to instal a pedestal fan close to the table we decided to occupy the only available table despite the warm weather. The weather seemed to be the only spoiler for an out and out Cambodian gastronomic experience. The chicken rice in lotus leaf was aromatic and delicious, the baked Amok and the pork sausages demonstrated the finest flavors of Khmer cuisine and the vegetable curry provided a completeness to the meal. The restaurant has a fair selection of wines and a good bottle can set you back by $60+. However, standard table wine is also available and you could always ask for a taste sip to determine whether these would be good for the evening. We chose a Cabernet as a Shiraz on a warm evening would have got us gasping and seeking cooler climes. Yes, we would go back but would prefer to be seated in an air conditioned environment next time. Service levels were adequate. Khmer hospitality is usually very courteous and graceful though speed of delivery may often pose an issue for the less patient folk.
