Description: Malis is a landmark restaurant that has long enjoyed a reputation for pushing the boundaries of fusion food with traditional, original and new age Cambodian cuisine. With capacious seating and four VIP rooms set in a courtyard around a fountain, it is undeniably the capital's premier gourmet dining experience. Its busy kitchen is home to Luu Meng, Cambodia's only masterchef, whose artfully prepared dishes have graced tables around the world.

We went twice to Malis in 2011 and 2012 and we loved the place. Even though the prices were high, the food was great and the atmosphere very nice, we wrote reviews in consequence at that time.
But going back this year, we can't say how much we're disappointed. Maybe we were unlucky, but we went there for a special night (valentine's day one month and a half ago), and it was just awkward. We were treated very poorly, the food tasted horrible, we were still starving at the end of the 3 courses menu because of the tiny portions. Before we ordered we asked twice if the menu was unique and thay said "yes", but lately, many people around (arrived both before and after us), received different courses than ours. When we asked about it, we were told that the menu had changed or that those people didn't like what was on the menu (so basically they could have offered different choices but they were just not willing to doing this for us...). Everyone around us complained as well, because of the size of the courses, and because of the service was very poor and we felt like we were real idiots to come there and pay 35 $ each (which is a HUGE price for Phnom Penh), to get almost nothing to eat in the end.
We asked the manager for explanations, as we used to love this place so much, and she said she couldn't do anything except giving 10% discount and free drinks. We thought it was fair, but when the bill came in no drinks at all had been crossed from the bill and we had to pay the whole thing, minus 5$ discount which was clearly not 10% of our more than 100$ value bill !!!!!
We clearly expressed our disappointment and our intention to never ever come back again, and neither the manager nor anyone else in the team tried to do something to make us, or the many other angry clients, a little happier (for example offering a real discount or real free drinks for the next visit...). If only they had explained that maybe it was a bad day for them, or that this would not happen again in the future, or if they'd asked us to come back another time and double check the food and the quality, we would have came back. But we really felt they neglected us and they didn't care at all, despite the massive complains.

Such a pity because this place was one of our favorite in Phnom Penh, but if they don't want to take care of their clients well too bad for them...

Saw all the reviews on Trip Adviser & went with an open mind , we arrived quite late and were given excellent service ( where there were some language problems these were easily overcome )
The food was brilliant and very different to your average Khmer fare . We were very happy with all aspects of Malis & will defiantly return !!

We found the food bad to mediocre. The mak mie with shrimp had some rotten-tasting mint which ruined the dish. The prawn with garlic had an indelible amount of garlic. My husband's Malis beef was a lovely piece of beef, but completely flavourless (and it was $26). I don't think they even salted it. The one winning dish was the fish amok, fish cooked in banana leaf with red curry.

The fresh brewed coffee was harsh. All of the guests were foreigners. Our total bill with only water and 2 beers was $71.

I wish we had eaten street food instead.

We ate lunch here on our last day in Phenom Penh in the outdoor dining room. The menu is fairly extensive and we only wished we had more time in the city for the simple reason to return for dinner! We ordered a Beef Carpaccio Khmer style that was so refreshing and delicious. We followed with Fish Amok, Crab Fried Rice and Prohok Ktis (a pork curry). It was so delicious we practically licked the plates. For dessert I had a Jasmine creme caramel (rather than the mouse they called it on the menu). I highly recommend this restaurant and suggest reservations if you wish to dine in the evening. Gorgeous!

Last time we were in PP this place hasn't opened so we decided to give it a try. The place was clean and airconditioned so that was good. The service on the other hand was a bit of a let down, it was slow. We have tasted better meals elsewhere but everyone is different. i am very fussy when it comes to food :-)
