I'm surprised at the polarized reviews - some are very positive and some are strongly negative. My experience was above average. I ordered chicken in mushroom cream sauce, my associate had beef filet. We shared a guacamole salad (seemed out of place for French restaurant but it was fresh and good), it was large enough for two individual portions. The chalkboard had a wide range of selections that all looked appetizing, I'll certainly return.

My wife and I have been regular patrons of La Marmite for about 10 years, but in the last few years, with so many new restaurants appearing in Phnom Penh, it accidentally fell off our liof places to go. This was remedied this weekend with another visit. There are 2 halves to the restaurant, one smoking, the other not. For a Friday evening, there were surprisingly few diners there. The food is delicious and very well priced. We both opted for tornados (beef steaks) but done to different temperatures and with different sauces. They were cooked to perfection, and the accompanying fried potatoes and green beans were good too. A good steak for less that $10 is hard to come by, but it is possible at La Marmite. Service was swift, and the wine was well priced too.

Restaurant was empty on arrival which was quite surprising for a Saturday night. However the special's board looked inviting so we persisted. Staff were attentive and accommodating with suggestions and changes to orders.

Appertisers of goats cheese on toast with green salad and onion soup were well presented and tasty. The mains special of scallops with bacon and cream sauce was acceptable but a little bland. The stewed wild boar with vegetables had plenty of flavor but the meat was dry and hard thus ruining the dish. Neither dish was served pipping hot.

The dessert special of pear with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate was the biggest disappointment. The pear was from a can and cold while the chocolate was a strange consistency and not hot. We could not eat it so asked for the bill and left.

Overall the experience was passable but given cost is double any decent local restaurant, it can not be considered value for money.

Still excellent value with good food. Not everything may be to your taste, but there is often and frequently a surprising delight. Well worth frequent visits. Some excellent dishes include skate wings, pommes dauphine (outstanding - to die for), stings beans are always delicious, tripe (prefect) creme brulee (perfect every time). Duck breast with green pepperorn sauce (wow). You get the idea. You've got to go more than once to enjoy La Marmite's culinary repertory.
