Blue Lime
Ranked #22 of 274 Hotels in Phnom Penh

Reviewed June 15, 2009

We stayed at the Blue Lime for 2 nights in June and then, due to a flight cancellation and the fact we liked the hotel so much, we stayed there for another 2 nights after we had spent 3 days in Siam Reap.

We booked based on the TA reviews and we weren't disappointed at all. All four in our party agreed it was one of the coolest hotels we'd ever stayed in. It is located next to the Royal Palace (well, the back of it) and in an alley off a very hectic street, however, don't let this put you off. As soon as you turn down the alley the sounds fizzle away and you enter the Blue Lime which is extremely quiet and serene.

The reception is ultra modern and trendy all the rooms are very nice - all boasting concrete furniture. The staff very friendly and helpful and the pool is area is sublime. We found the breakfasts lovely - bread, fruit, fruit juice, tea and coffee and and omelette. The bar food was also very good and the bar prices reasonable. Free internet access was a nice perk, as was the free water each day in our rooms (which were also very nicely fitted out).

We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a trendy yet very serene hotel. There are a few noises from neighbouring properties, and the barking of dogs did become slightly irksome once or twice but this takes nothing away from the Blue Lime in our humble opinions.

We had looked up a list of guesthouses before settling on Blue Lime. The pictures in its website did not disappoint. The location (near the Royal Palace) was central to almost anywhere and was quite easy to locate. We managed to get our bearings on the first day of our stay.
The staff, especially by the pool and bar, was humble and extremely accomodating to guests. We highly recommend Blue Lime for its 'home away from home' feeling.
Unlike other guesthouses, its room decor was a welcome change; mostly designed in concrete. We had a room on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the pool.
Our choice for a stay at Phnom Penh!

Had a couple of nights here, but very disapointed. Firstly i took on board what other reviewers had said about downstairs rooms and specificaly ask the hotel not to give us these. Despite this they did, so big fat zero for booking in service. I agree with other travellers do not take the standard double as they are on the ground floor and doors open directly into reception, no privacy and plenty of noise all night. Plus our room was next to the poolside bar, so more noise.
The pool here is good and does get busy at weekends but the hotel does have 'reserved for hotel guests' signs up now on the seating around the pool. Staff generally friendly but unhelpful.
Breakfast is poor, you get juice or tea/coffee and one slice of anemic toast, next day i got a roll and small plate of fruit. Location ok but hard to find for tuk tuk's.
My dislikes are noise, lack of privacy, small rooms, breakfast, dirty towels and lack of hot water.
My likes are pool and quilted toilet paper !
Overall very disappointing despite all the rave reviews, if your thinking about standard double forget it. My advise would be to pay the extra few bucks and go around the corner to its sister hotel the Pavilion.

The two downstairs rooms are the cheapest ones as they indeed suffer from more noise. I have installed a second door and thought that was enough. We will try to put double glass and see if it stops the noise.

There is now an entrance fee for outside visitors that has cut down by half the number of non-staying visitors. I hope that will be appreciated as it is a substantial financial effort.

Breakfast is indeed simple but unlimited.

Had not noticed dirty towels, will check that with the cleaners today.

And if the toilet paper is good, we will put some more!

We stayed for 2 nights in May. We liked the location and the pool. Our room was on the top floor and we had to climb almost 70 steps to get to it. - there is no lift. Had we known this in advance we would not have stayed at this hotel. There were some niggles:

Low water pressure in the shower
Our room safe didn't work on the first day (it was repaired later) and with no room phone this meant we had to descend and ascend the stairs to report it
Cleaning staff put clean towels and bedsheets directly onto the concrete floor when making up the rooms which we found unhygenic
Breakfast was nice but portions tiny - better to have a basket of bread and rolls on each table rather that the set roll and 2 slices with insufficient butter and jam for all three items of bread
Boxes for tips for staff were 'in your face'. On the check -in counter and on the pool bar counter were wooden boxes for tips with brass plaques telling guests that tips would be shared amongst all staff - better to pay staff higher salaries!

Indeed the last floor is steep up! Impossible to negotiate with the constructor at the time of building. The number of stairs and the angle have to match the needs of the auspicious numbers and so on...

I have made the tip boxes very obvious as previously only the staff that has direct contact with the guests was getting tips. I thought it was quite unfair to the others that are also trying their best.

About the salaries, from my surveys, the staff of Pavilion, Kabiki and Blue Lime is paid around 30% higher than in similar businesses in Phnom Penh and get other benefits such as training, sick leave, etc. Guests are free to ask directly the staff if this is true or not.

We loved staying at the Blue Lime Hotel. We had a wonderful hotel room overlooking the pool. The pool and garden were a perfect place in a busy city. The only thing that we didn't like was the breakfast. It wasn't tastefull at all. Other than that: I would recommend staying here if you like a small, boutique hotel with a trendy look & feel.

Blue Lime was a great hotel, in a good, safe location just behind the national museum. Whilst the alley is off a main/busy road, the hotel was very quiet which was great. As a single female traveling, I was totally comfortable here. The rooms were minimalist, however were clean and had everything you needed - the deluxe rooms have plenty of room with a small outside balcony as well. The pool area, was lovely for a relax at the end of a day sightseeing and the breakfast in the morning was great. Getting around was easy enough with tuk tuks right out the front of the hotel. The only thing was there was little information in the hotel re sightseeing hints & tips, however suggest if you have a lonely planet, you're more than fine there. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

we booked this hotel based on the good review online to be our first stay in Cambodia. through email i told the staff clearly that we would arrive 21:30 by airplane to Phnom Penh and will arrive the hotel quite late in the night, and request them to keep the room. the confirmation has been circled via email for couple of rounds.
our flight was delayed for a hour that day and we arrived the hotel around 23:30 with the excitement of this new destination. then, the story rolls out..... the door keeper told us there was no room at all and he tried to reach the hotel staff. after half hour a lady came to tell us that she mistook our arrival as 2pm, so she sold the room to others in the afternoon already. so we had no way but only being redirected to another plain guesthouse at 1am!!! and charged $70 (even higher then if we booked online). be noted... the hotel will charge you 100% if a no show, but when there comes "no-room" upon firm confirmation, they only give a "sorry". when we complained this to the hotel owner, he only replied " That's right, dinner's on me next time you are in Phnom Penh." Gosh, that was after we returned home country. i would never want to see this hotel any more!
it's a mess as an simple booking process, and not responsible attitude for their guests at all!

At the time this incident happened, I was in Bangkok. The staff, which has the instruction to call me at any time of the day or night, did not manage to get hold of me at midnight. I later understood that the room had been given to a walk-in guest in the morning that they had mixed-up with the one that had booked. I indeed proposed a diner for two, roughly representing the value of the room as a compensation - I guess that was not enough....
