A bit of a confusing experience, for the gritty bit - just go straight to the last bit of this review. We are currently backpacking and staying in a number of places. My wife and I often stay in some nice places, some cheaper places, sometimes in between, I guess we're 'flashpacking' as I've heard it called. We stayed in Cambodia while trying to sort our Chinese Visa and so we were stuck here for quite a while as we waited for 2 placements in china to send us a letter of invite. In total we stayed at Me Mates Place for around 2 weeks... a very long time to stay in a backpacking place.
Firstly the rooms themselves were mixed, but generally very good. There is air con in all rooms, plus the privates (we stayed in) were spacious (generally) and quite nice rooms. Some of the private rooms we stayed in did have a damp problem (2 of the 4 rooms) but generally this was only apparent in one of the rooms, where it was in the corner. The nicest room we stayed in was without a window at $20 a night which was 102, this was out of the way, but looked newer.
Food downstairs was always good quality and we always tipped the waitress as she was brilliant and polite, whilst waiting out of the way. Absolute star and always smiling, loved it when we tried to speak Khmer.
The thing that soured our experience was one of the men at reception. They are all smiling and polite however when we put in our passports for our vietnamese passports (having been there for 2 weeks already and getting to know people fairly well) we were charged $70 rather than $65. We thought this was a bit odd as we had heard someone else quoted $65 and thought not to say anything because we had been there with the people for 2 weeks... We asked for a receipt and the guy looked very confused .. waited a second and then nervously signed a piece of paper with no price. Two days later we were sat eating food downstairs when a group of backpackers asked the other reception man for a visa to Vietnam and how much it would cost, they were told $65. Feeling a little bit wronged as we had been there so long and they were obviously ripping us off while we there, we decided to say something, the same man the overcharged us a total of $10 walked by and we asked him again how much it cost, he told us $70. I figured I had misheard the backpackers but my wife asked them directly and walked to the reception where both the dodgy reception man and the helpful one were and asked them directly within five minutes of being told $70. Suddenly the dodgy one was apologetic and reached straight for his wallet, saying he was confused and then making up several lies which he had literally just told us the exact opposite, when challenged he said he was confused.
We then were told they had space in the rooms for another 4 nights and we would have to move once. The man I spoke to was the dodgy receptionist who ripped us off. He assured us we had a double the next night on floor 2, followed by a move to floor 4 for the last nights, put our name on the system and then told us it was sorted. The next day we came down to move rooms and he (after the situation the day before) told us that the hostel was full and that we spoke to Bar staff. We said he didn't know who we spoke to (despite us knowing it was him) and told us that there was space up the road in another hostel, probably. We were pretty frustrated by this point and decided we had, rightly had enough. The man was not apologetic but went red while we was explaining this to us, despite us being polite and asking questions about alternatives... he had clearly done this to get rid of us after he had taken our money and been confronted about it. He did not offer our deposit for our keys back, as he had also conveniently 'forgotten this', however we had to ask for it as we were walking out of the door, having forgotten we had paid it.
We enjoyed most of our stay here, despite being asked every day where we were going, but the people and rooms were amazing, however one dodgy receptionist repeatedly screwed us at reception even after 2 weeks of tipping staff and being polite, speaking the language etc. which left a sour taste. Will not return and can not recommend.
