The Quay Boutique Hotel
Ranked #216 of 277 Hotels in Phnom Penh
Reviewed April 19, 2009

We had the happy chance of being moved to The Quay as our room at the FCC (their sister hotel) had a leak. What total luck. Beautiful spacious rooms, huge bathrooms with powerful showers, rooftop jacuzzi and great staff. The location is also fantastic - just 8 minute walk to the National Museum and Grand Palace and right on the riverfront. Delicious breakfast and great bar snacks. Basically, you do get what you pay for at The Quay. I would definitely go back.

Here is everything in a nutshell:
the goods: breakfast is great, location is great, service is good, people are friendly, the rooftop bar is nice
the bads: really only one thing: the rooms to the backside and since they miss a real window it's a bit claustrophobic.
It's a good hotel to stay one or two nights. Phnom Penh isn't ready for tourism yet but it does have potential ... and so does "The Quay".

Went to this hotel after being very dissapointed with the FCC - what a gem! - superb modern boutique hotel which was fautless with the service and quality. Very unusual to find a hotel in this part of the world meeting global standards but this one does with ease. Minor points to look for is the noise from the rooftop bar that can be heard in the top floor rooms, but stops at 11pm. Front rooms have good views of the river, rear rooms have no direct sunlight but are beautifully finished and perfectly fine (and less money). Staff all outstanding, these guys really have learnt how to deliver the boutique hotel experience. Not a cheap option but clearly well worth the money, head and shoulders above the rest, so refreshing to fnd a hotel doing it right. cannot recommend enough, simply brilliant. Rooftop bar / jacuzzi is cool - you could be in Milan! - don't even think of staying anywhere else.

During a recient family trip through SE Asia we were blessed to stay in this hotel one night. In looking back, we should have cancelled some of our other stops and stayed here more. From the email booking to the arrival to the assistance in purchesing bus tickets to Siem Reap (with NO mark up!!) and the wonderful room and great breakfast, it is definatly worth another trip to PP just to stay in this hotel! Room was large and bright and the bathroom was amazing. Though a bit expensive, worth it in the long run.

I stayed here for only one night as I was chased out of the previous hotel due to their mistake for overbooking. The contrast in service, amenities, menu, room comfort level was drastic!

THE QUAY has the best menu in beverages as well as food. This hotel caters to your 5 senses. The rooms are such a sight to behold. The bathrooms are exquisite. The tub is big enough for a couple. Though the hot water supply is a challenge in the morning. The soap is a locally made. Internet is free. The aircon is powerful. Flat screen TV with cables of 60 over channels. A reasonable size safe. Imported sliding door to deflect the noise from the traffic. The bed is firm with crisp white sheets. The pillows do not stink... most hotels in Cambodia have smelly pillows. They have a roof top bar and Patio overlooking the setting sun. A soak in the roof top Jacuzzi with their Martinis was what I did.

I will absolutely recommend that you pay a bit more for this accommodation. Yes it is expensive but it is worth every penny. I wake up late and spend my time getting ready for the day's activities. I will return to my room for a snooze in the hot afternoon. This hotel is filled with metro sexual Europeans and feasting on their fashion attire is such an eye candy. :)

I find the reviews on this hotel utterly unfair. Yes it's quite pricey for Cambodia but at less than 100 quid a night I would still consider it a bargain. The room is simply spectacular. One of the best rooms I have had the fortune to stay in (and we stay in some very nice hotels). The style of the room was very funky and the room itself was massive and open plan with an enormous bed, gigantic plasma screen TV and huge, luxurious bathroom. There was a balcony too but as there was quite a lot of construction work outside it wasn't that relaxing to sit outside. On the roof is a stunning bar area with restaurant and jacuzzi where we whiled away a few hours one afternoon being served beers by the very friendly staff. Very relaxing. As for noise from the bar and noise from the lift - we had a 3rd floor room and heard nothing. The location is perfect, bang where you want to be, and the lovely cooked to order breakfasts were a treat. The pick-up service from the airport worked like a dream and the driver who took us to the Killing Fields and the Russian market was polite and friendly.

I'm quite into my hotels and we had a look at the Amanjaya which looked tired and went for a drink in Raffles which was OK if a bit old fashioned. The FCC was OK but clearly the Quay is now the group's flagship hotel. Overall Phnom Penh is a very cool, vibrant and interesting place to spend a few days and the Quay is simply perfect as a base. My wife is very fussy and didn't particularly like Phnom Penh but she did love the hotel. The negative comments on here are very odd and really don't reflect the reality. The one who said the floor was slippy?! Come on!!!!

I was in room 15 balcony room paying 140 a night for 5 nights. The music from the top club begins at 11am and goes till 11pm. What does this do? Create a low but easily heard bass beat non-stop. When checking out I told the assistant manager that the room should be discounted. His reply was that many guests have complained and they are working on it and he was sorry. Not good enough. I however only heard talking and footsteps while in the bathroom.

The low ceiling near the balcony did indeed cause me to bump my head twice and my wife once.

Another thing they don't tell you when booking is the huge and sometimes loud construction project going on in front of the hotel along the river. However, the traffic noise was never a problem.

Some other minor annoyances:

Twice in e-mails I mention it was out 1st year wedding anniversary that no one acknowledge at the hotel. However, there was a large bottle of French mineral water and snacks waiting in the room. I have no idea if this was standard practice or not since there was no note.

Many of the staff have limited English which meant that the gentleman showing us to our room was unable to tell me what all the switches were for when I asked. (I eventually figured them out.)

They advertise a pool. I don't think so. A wading pool yes, right in front of the bar if you want everyone staring at you.

Now the GOOD:

About the best location possible.

Beautiful room, bathroom and balcony. (except for that damn low ceiling near the balcony)

Friendly staff. (Though unhelpful assistant manger.)

GREAT breakfast from Chow restaurant. You can chose from many options and have it delivered free to your room each morning. Who's needs a buffet, there was plenty!

Fair price for airport transfers, $11 each way.

So in conclusion, I would have given this hotel 4 stars instead of three if I had been on the 3rd floor or if they had discounted the room for us because of the music,

This hotel is not for everybody, at $140 a night for a balcony room it's very expensive for Cambodia. I would however stay here again, just not on the top floor. (I LOVE the room)

I did mention all my complaints in the survey they sent. So far no response.
