“Clean, tidy Boutique s/c hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2010

This hotel was recommended by a fellow Trip Advisor member.
We had a complimentary pick up from the airport in a smart 'people mover' car. The reception staff were extremeley helpful, some spoke better english than others so sometimes communication was a little more difficult, but they were always polite.

The Studio room was a little smaller than I had anticipated because it was an awkward shape. The bedroom area was adequate size with bedside table one side and tall glass table the other. Bedding clean and smart, bed comfortable. There was a dressing table and adequate wardrobe space - good as we were staying 5 nights! + locking drawer as a safe.
The room then narrowed into a corridoor effect with bathroom off - modern, smart, but shower grouting around base in need of renewal.
The rest of the narrow area up to the room door was a kitchenette, large worksurface with small table + 2 chairs. There was a small fridge, 2mugs,plates,bowls, 2 spoons and two forks and no knives! Also a rice cooker.
This was not really a problem as we had breakfast included and as eating out is so cheap we did not self cater. However when the maid wasin the room opposite cleaning I noticed many more cooking items. I asked about it and she explained that some rooms are government rented long term and so have more facilities. When we returned at the end of the day she had put an electric frypan into our room!
The buffet breakfast was typical of this part of the world, but better than expected. Hot small sausages, noodles, boiled eggs, chicken, toast with jams, fruit juice, tea & coffee. It was varied daily and served in the very nice restaurant (Charcoal Grill) that was linked to the hotel.
There is free wifi but you need to sit in one of the 'lounge' areas to access a good signal.
Our only downside was that we could not get a return to the airport as it was a Sunday and the driver was off duty! Their return to airport was only 10BND, however a taxi was only 20BND set fee in BSB.
The location again was typical of similar countries, you drive off the main road into what seems a run down area (compared to modern cities) and the hotel is set amongst it all.
Having said that we could get the bus from a nearby stop or as we tended to do - walk into BSB via one of the footbridges across part of the water village and end up alongside the Mosque.
All in all a very good hotel - would use it again. 80BND for s/c studio inc b/fast.

For Brunei Dollar BND80, it has a kitchenette, mini fridge, nice aircon, comfy toilet, free wifi, and supposedly B'fast (which I didn't try, went out for breakfast).

As Bandar Seri Begawan is not a big city, Le Gallery's location is just as good as any other hotels.

HOWEVER, I had a horrible experience checking out, as I was catching a 8:20am flight out, I absolutely needed to have my ride ready at 7 am. Not only did it not arrive, the front desk staff had extremely little interest in my predicament (I made airport transfer arrangements the night before), he also sat on the bill, I had to keep remindiing him to call the transport person, which after a few times, he started calling. He didn't know how to operate the credit card machine, much to my urging to settle the bill, he keep saying it's still early.

Anyhow, the ride didn't come, the staff never was able to charge my card, I had to settle with cash. AND I nearly missed my flight.

Anyway, check out this place, it's a convenient place to stay if you're in for some work, sort of hit and run pace. Definitely not a resort, but a comfortable, reasonably priced, convenient place to hole up for 2 nights, this place will be great. Just make sure you have enough time to settle the bill and make sure they arranged your airport transfer.

We chose Le Gallery from other traveller reviews. I must say that on arrival all seemed modern and efficient. The staff are lovely and willing to help. The corridors are funky and modern...but the rooms were worn and lacking.

We stayed twice in two different rooms, the second was larger and a little more maintained.

Pros - The location was good, not right in the centre of town, but only a short ride in one of many buses away. All local buses cost $1 BN, no matter where you are going. Plenty of places to eat and shop within the complex. We paid $60 BN per night for our room, which came with Sat TV, mini bar, (very reasonable prices), tea/coffee facilities, air con etc.

There is a laundry which is free, with washing machines and dryers. There was also a lunch room with Microwave, sink and dining room table/chairs, on the same floor as our room.

Within the Seri Complex, which is a group of buildings, you can find many eateries (I can recommend Sui Heng), a bowling alley, game arcade, a fantastic bakery (Sweet Deli), department store, supermarket and independent shops.

Cons - On arrival (each time) we found only one towel ???? and NO toiletries or hair dryer are provided, apart from a soap dispenser. The rooms needed a coat of paint and the showers, a good bleaching.....we found tiling to be a skill yet to be mastered in Borneo.

On our first stay, the view from our room was a concrete wall, on the second, it was a view of the court yard.

Breakfast was a complete disappointment, consisting of 4 main dishes, all cold or lukewarm: Eggs (boiled or scrambled), Chicken sausage, noodles or rice and toast, tea, coffee and juice. In all we had 8 breakfasts' and on each occasion we felt like we were inconveniencing the staff, who almost grunted as we entered and seemed to more interested in watching TV.

PLEASE NOTE, even though the Charcoal Grill (who provides breakfast) is in the same building, it is under noticeably different management. We were not alone in thinking we had arrived as breakfast was ending, due to the lack of choice.

If you really have trouble eating what they are offering, walk to the Emporium supermarket the evening before and make use of the cooking facilities in the hotel.

I booked my room through Intrepid tours who stated we had free Airport - Hotel transfers. In reality only the airport pick up is free and the transfer back to the airport is $5 BN, which is very reasonable.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like more photos.
