I was there 2 weeks ago. The park was not upto standard especially for foreigners as they are charged Taka 150 for entry! The main building was under renovation and most of the area looked deserted. A lot of local just walking around the lake. I felt it was a waste of time and energy.

5 minutes drive will take you to a small/old neighbourhood called Panam city. Beautiful architecture and very friendly local. I walked around the neighbourhood for more than an hour. A small lane with pretty little houses and the photos came out amazing. Definitly worth a visit.

The first place I visited when I arrived in Bangladesh.
This used to be the capital of Bangladesh, and has a lot of historical value.

It is very scenic, and the main building is currently under restoration. You can take a tour round this, and there are several artifacts in the rooms. There is also a museum that describes the history of Bangladesh - although all in Bangla.
However, the remaining area is full of stalls and hawkers trying to sell you stuff. On one hand you don't mind this as people need refreshments (especially after the journey), although you wonder about the relevance of these to what you've actually come to see. And like the rest of Bangladesh it becomes tiresome.

You need to make quite a journey to get here - and if there's traffic (oh, in Bangladesh there IS!) it can take nearly 6 hours for the round trip. Only go if you've got patience and a whole day.

Been there just this weekend. The site is under renovation, so if you're planning to see the historical part, don't bother going, because it's closed anyway. There is a park and lake inside the complex, where the locals hang out, but I wouldn't say it's worth driving 25-30 km from Dhaka just for that. We asked the construction workers to go inside for just 5 minutes, and they were kind enough to allow, but of course we could see the minimum. There is a museum inside, which is open. They don't charge for entrance, since you buy the ticket when you enter the complex. The museum is so-so. The oldest item dates back to 18th century. Didn't impress much. The park around isn't bad, and there is even something like a market for local goods, where you can bargain to buy scarves and cheap jewelry. The road took us around 3 hours, because of the heavy traffic. If you still end up choosing to go there, do drive to Panam city, which is nearby Sonargaon. Panam is a deserted city (in reality it's just one long street), with houses still standing locked. It did impress us, which I can't say about Sonragaon.

On the Dhaka-Chittagong highway about 29 km from Dhaka, Sonargaon is oldest and ancient capital of Bengal ruled by Isa Khan. Another name of Sonargaon was "The City of Panam". Today, old Sonargaon is home to some of the oldest buildings in Bangladesh. Many people still visit the historic city of Sonargaon. They are attracted by its immense beauty and by the ruins of buildings and relics that date back to the era of Bengal. I visited sonargaon with my family and I really enjoyed a lot. i visited there the ancient city and "Lok Shilpa Jadughar (Folk Art and Craft Museum)". It is the best place who love to visit historic places. I want go there again and again.
