“Old Capital of Bangladesh”

It's little bit away from Dhaka city. It is the place to see Mughal art and architecture. Roads here are narrow but peaceful. You can also visit "Panam Nagori". This is located nearby.

“Old capital”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The place is about 20 kms from Dhaka. a museum which seems has been renovated recently is good to watch. u can see the history of Bangladesh, miniature art work. The old buildings are now being conserved by the Archelogical department. The Sonargoan city, popularly called Panam, is located nearby. The main attraction to me was the architecture, the streets are narrow but peaceful. One can get the idea about the place which at one point of time was the trade centre. The buildings are in a state of ruins, then u can always enjoy pieces of history.

The entry to museum is paid and different rates for local and foreigners. A must visit place for the history lovers. If u go in the month of summer u can have a feast of local mangoes that too at cheaper rates. Come explore the place.

“Photogenic But Not Ready for Prime Time”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Panam ruins were lovely but a very long way to go. I felt the same way about the ill-kept Folk Art Musuem. The journey getting there was much more interesting. Along the way we hired a small local boat chosen at random and the owner and his son took us to their home island where we spent an hour or so wandering around the village. Not a speck of land was higher than a meter above the water. Chicken, goats, and cows -- and cow manure being dried for cooking fuel. Some of the houses had sporadic electricity. We learned that 5,000 people lived on the island. Wonderful colors and decoration. Very friendly people who were amazed to find foreigners visiting. There is a new primary school on the island and attendance is free so all the kids go. The children were beautiful -- attractive, healthy, curious, friendly. Really worth finding a way to get really off the beaten track to get a sense of riverine Bangladesh.
