“Discover Old Dhaka”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

I had been trying to get someone to take my husband and me on a tour of the old part of this very old city for some time, but I had little success. Then, I heard about the Urban Study Group's walking tours. We have been on two tours so far. Tours are 3-1/2 to 4 hours and cover about 5 kilometers of the back alleys and small streets that wind through the densely populated area. Walking is really the only way to see some of the more interesting historical sites. You will visit sites dating from Mughal Empire to the British Raj to contemporary Dhaka. Old Dhaka is the recycling center of the entire country. The workshops recycle everything. It is quite amazing to see.
Taimur is well versed in the history as well as the architecture and is a sincere advocate of preserving Bangladesh's historical buildings and monuments. He brings maps, copies of illustrations and drawings from museum collections, and computer-generated reconstructions of what the ruins may have looked like when they were whole. The tour is well worth the 3-4 hours of time you invest in it.

“Great insight into disappearing Old Dhaka”
Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

The purpose of the Urban Study Group is to protect old building and precincts under threat from development. In providing regular walks - every weekend - they hope to show demonstrate to visitors and ex-pats what is at risk. We found our walk through the Chandni Chowk area and visit to Shia Mosques on the eve of the important Ashura processions absolutely fascinating. People opened their homes to us and, in doing so, let us glimpse times past. I would encourage anyone with a morning free on a Friday or Saturday to do one of these walks. They are a must do part of any visit to Dhaka.

“Discovering Old-Dhaka!”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

The 4 hours walk through the old city of Dhaka was a wonderful, surprising and interesting adventure, which now allows me a complete new view at the capital of Bangladesh. The historical and architectural information from Taimur were very interesting, enriched with a little boat trip, enjoying the view from the top of some houses, discover backyards, visit some local factories and meet the local people. The quality of that little trip is priceless and i am looking forward to discover another part of Dhaka with Taimur and his students during my next visit!
Thank you so much!

“A fascinating look at architecture and the sights of old Dhaka”
Reviewed May 31, 2011

The Urban Study Group (U.S.G) are trying to preserve the mughal and colonial era buildings in old Dhaka. On a U.S.G. tour, participants spend around 4 to 5 hours walking around the suburbs of Old Dhaka taking in some of the tourist sights such as the Armenian Church and Star Mosque along with the buildings that U.S.G. are trying to preserve and restore. Tours cover Sadarghat, Banglabazar, Chowk Bazar, and surrounding neighbourhoods. Wander around the back alleys and spice markets and enjoy the history that Dhaka has to offer. Tours cost 500 taka which is very reasonably priced. Walks can be strenuous, especially in the heat, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Don't forget to bring your camera.
