This museum is in fact two museums in one. It is set in the former mansion of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, one of the most remarkable persons in the history of Azerbaijan. Taghiyev was an oil baron who devoted his life and his wealth to his country. The first floor of the museum illustrates the rich and colorful history of Azerbaijan while on the second floor visitors can see the rooms once belonging to and inhabited by Taghiyev and his family. An unforgettable experience for all who are interested in learning more about Azerbaijan!

The history museum is one of the oldest in Baku and it's situated in Taghiyev's house. However, the museum is oriented on the history of Azery's in 19th and 20th century with limited number of the 18th century historyor even older.

This museum covers the broad sweep of Azerbaijani history, and also features outstanding ceramics, metalwork and textiles. There are captions and explanations in English. And, as an added bonus, after the chronological sequence followed by the museum, you get to experience the lavish formal rooms of the "oil boom" Taghiyev mansion, with their Art Nouveau wallpapers and carving.
