“Burning feeling”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

I guess I had understood burning hill to be a whole hill covered in fire. It is spectacular to see even a little area (a couple of bath mats) in flame, but it was a bit of a let down based on the descriptions

Went at night when it looks spectacular. Tongues of fire dancing out of the earth, and the heat... very "other worldly".

“An Azeri Hot Spot”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Sorry about the title, I just couldn't resist.

As attractions go, Yanar Dag is small, kind of grubby and lacking in amenities and safety elements like fences and hand-rails....but the mountain is on fire!!!!!!

Well a small (20feet long) section is on fire. The entirety of Baku is floating on an underground sea of oil and petroleum. Yanar Dag is a natural vent of some petroleum by-product that was inadvertently ignited in the recent past. And given Azerbaijan's informal status as a country of fire, and it's Zoroastran past, Yanar Dag has a special status.

The site is small and there is a small charge. But you have direct and unimpeded access to the fire. No fences, no safety zones...if you want to walk up and experience the fire, no-one and nothing is going to stop you.

There isn't a lot to do in Baku. Yanar Dag is well worth the trip. The only downside is the attraction is pretty far out of town. A taxi ride isn't too expensive but....it means sharing the road with INSANE Azeri drivers.
