“Feels more like a homestay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

The Altstadt Hotel has a great location, of course, right in the middle of the old citadel, and in a very expensive city for lodging, it's almost reasonably priced. But it's more like a small guesthouse than a hotel, My single room was small but functional. Bathroom was clean though tiny--the sink is about the size of a dinner plate and low down, so if you are relatively tall, rinsing after brushing your teeth can be a bit like target practice.

The wifi is free and works well. The breakfast is served is a small dining room with the TV going all the time. It's very basic stuff: tea, boiled eggs, olives, some cheese. The hotel's manager Eynulla is very helpful and speaks English well. He can easily organize day trips. I hired him to take me to visit some carpet factories in Quba, which is his native town, and he was both enthusiatic and helpful as a guide. But bargain hard!

His son mans the front desk during the day and is also useful. Unfortunately at night the desk is taken over by a gangly youth who's completely clueless and unhelpful. He sometimes has friends over and/or talks on Skype, so if you have a ground-floor room it can get a bit noisy at night, also if you have windows at street level.

Overall the Altstadt is fine without being great.

Room Tip: If possible choose a room upstairs. The ground floor rooms hear everything that happens in the lobby...

In a great location for tourism, this small hotel makes one feel welcome, and the value for money would be hard to beat. The room, with bathroom en suite, was small, but provided all the necessary amenities.

Based upon value for money this must outrank all of the other accommodation in Baku but to top this off the owner and his son are welcoming and so so helpful. We regret not staying here before and will certainly stay here next time.
